Does anybody own one or have any personal knowlege of the SPOT Satellite Personal Tracker and Messenger ????

It looks like one of them things we all should have?

No personal knowledge of the SPOT, but take a look at the videos on the Epirb/PLB that I posted. I think that you're probably better off with the PLB, .

I bought one for my wife and daughters to take hiking. I works pretty much as advertised. An EPIRB would be better for offshore fishing but the spot is better than nothing.

the spot has been known not to have near the service as i would want for a life saving device.get the E-Pirb.

The EPIRB is an emergency device to be used in the event of a serious event that requires immediate assistance. The SPOT is a tracking device for following the movements of the SPOT from a remote location. They are not competitive so it is not one or the other.

FWIW- For those who didn't see it, an 8 or 9 day only promotion by the company just ended Fri. 3/27. They offered free SPOT devices to anyone subscribing for 1 yr to the basic messengering service plus the optional tracking service for a total of $149.98 inclusive. There were a lot of posts about that on various boating & fishing sites.

I'd like to make a few comments relative to SPOT. It is monitored by a commercial source, not the Coast Guard. Any distress information would have to run through several time consuming filters before it gets to the Coast Guard. The device is not Coast Guard approved, meaning it has not been tested by the CG for standards of waterproofness, impact resistance, battery life and durability. After 3 years the price of the SPOT and an EPIRB essentially equalize.
