Curious - How Many Have Done A Boating Course?

Recommended Posts

My wife and I have both taken many US Power Squadron courses and now hold the rank of JN or Junior Navigator. After attainingg that I went on to get my USCG OUPV & Master - my USPS courses made passing the five USCG tests a breeze. They were no where near as tough as the USPS JN test.

I very much believe in the continuing education, training and comradery the USPS offers its members.

Did you get your vessel safety check?

I took the online course for Ga a few years back, passed it and got my Ga card. I will probably go back and take it again just for the knowledge which is why I did it the first time. There is a lot of information to study and absorb, shows you just how much you do not know as someone stated above.

took a full day power squad course when I was 14, along with my brother who was at the time 11, and my father. This was at the time of him purchasing a jet ski for the family. The class was geared completely toward safety, as well as basic do's and don'ts on the water, as well as essential navigation skills for lake & inland boating. Fortunately I had been on the water my entire life prior to that and was fairly comfortable with everything, which made the class even more valuable.

Mine are USPS classes with an Advanced Pilot Certification. I taught Public Boating and Seamanship for a while too. Excellent programs!

AP was the finest course in the USPS catalog (is it still given?). I started with the old basic boating course in 1970 or so, then seamanship, and AP. Dropped out of JN. Taught Basic Boating and also Marine Electronics for several squadrons.

Still have my old courseplotter, too.
