Expanding Reefs

Recommended Posts

Most of the reefs in New Jersey are getting a lot of additional structure. It's been a great program and one of the few things the state gets right. The state coordinates the "reef " program but the money for the structure (rubble, old decommisioned tugs and trawlers, subway cars, etc ) usualy comes from other sourses.

And when they really "set up" and start to attract fish, the commercial potters will arrive and cover up the reef to the point that it is unusable. The artificial reefs off of Delaware were paid for by rec fisherman and are routinely cleaned out by the potters. Delaware (unlike NJ) is doing nothing about it.

So how long after they dump a load on stone over the reef can we expect to be able to fish it again? I would think that the rock needs to settle a bit and start growing stuff to atract more fish.

The other question is are they adding on to the overall square footage or piling on top? Hopefully not covering up what is already there and working.

Yeah, I am a newbie when it comes to this particullar topic so forgive the ignorance. :504_shrugging:
