Lower unit oil

Recommended Posts

When you pump in the new lube, be sure you have the engine trimmed level and pump until the lube starts to come out of the top hole. Install the top plug first, then remove the fill tube and install the bottom plug.

The Yamaha Lube I get from SIM is green in color.

Thanks for the link. I got everything right except for switching out the seals on the plugs. Should I go back and switch them out? I went back and looked at the quart of oil and it reads Yamah gear oil. It says it is for all Yamaha outboard lower units and outdrives. :504_shrugging:

One thing I didn’t see in the pictures was a torque wrench. Those drain plugs (and everything else on a Yamaha that tightens) has torque spec's noted in the manual. I must admit that I have inserted a few heil coils in the past but when I got my twin F-115 in 2000, I purchased a torque wrench and have been religious about using it. My twins have no hiel coils installed to date and for plugs (drain and spark), with aluminum threads, that are removed and reinstalled each fall, that is doing pretty good....at least for me. MDT

If you took out blue-green oil it was probably merc synthetic lower unit fluid. Many people swear by this stuff (in any brand LU) - and you may have put in non-synthetic in its place. Not the end of the world, just something to think about. The synthetic is only a couple bucks more and allegedly it does a better job in case you get water intrusion etc.
