Woody Wax

Recommended Posts

I have seen this on many websites. Does anyone use it? Does it work? My boat interior is that splattered, non-skid type finish and I have never really been sure how to clean and care for it. It seems a little pricey but if it works it is probably worth it.

I was very skeptical. Bought one bottle for our SF and never used it. Later got another bottle and used it on my cc and love it. Cleaned the deck first with Starbrite deck cleaner. Was sure to get into every nook and cranny and remove every stain. Then I applied the Woody Wax as directed. That stuff is like non-stick spray for a frying pan. No more deck scrubbing, yet it is not slick when properly applied!

As hotspot said, " a little bit goes a long way." For deck applications, you don't use much.

"not slick when properly applied!" - That is the key. I did not rinse a section properly and strained my knee and ankle while reaching over the gunwale docking. Not wearing proper footwear probably added to that slip up :1898_:

I still use it and really enjoy how it speeds clean-up at the end of the day. I also use it on all the brite work.

Free Samples - thanks Wiley :1992_beer_cheer:

It really helps keep the non skid clean; stuff comes off much easier. I catch a lot of ladyfish here for bait and man they can slop up your deck! I use Starbrite deck cleaner too, which really cleans the deck, follow it with a coat of Woody. I only wish it lasted longer between applications. It is really easy to apply so it's not a big deal.

On my 23 foot bay boat, I would wash it up and leave it wet on the inside. Shake the can well and spray 3 squirts on my wet desk brush and apply to the front third of the boat, then three more squirts for the middle third and 3 more for the rear third. Then I would take a wet rag, three squirts and wipe down all the bright work.

After 30 minutes, I would buff it in with a soft wash pad on my deck brush pole.

I would do this only 4 times a year. Makes clean up so much easier it ain't funny.

The guy that bought my boat could not believe it was 6 years old with 1300 hours. Looked new.

The problem you may run into with a webbed finish deck is porosity of the surface. The gelcoat surface, due to a number of reasons, is not sealed the same way a molded, shiny gelcoat surface is. There are a couple of methods that provide a good sealed surface but these are largely ignored due to process time at the factory.

These webbed finishes, while shiny when new usually degrade pretty fast when exposed to the sun. The porosity captures dirt and grime pretty well. Applying wax over it can seal in that dirt. The wax itself may leave an uneven appearance even if the deck is really clean.

I'm not saying don't do it, just that the results may not be as good as you expect. If you do it and keep up with it it will probably get better over time and should help protect the surface going forward. It will certainly help with cleanup.
