If most of what you are doing is on a lake, I would thnk a good handheld VHF radio would be sufficient. As for a GPS, I bought a Garmin 441 last year and really like it. My model has the coastal maps in it, I would imagine you would want whatever lake you frequent and possibly buy the additoonal map for whatever saltwater area you frequent. If you have the extra $, go for the 551, it has a bigger screen.

HELP! I have a section of rub rail that was damaged and would like to replace all of it. The boat is a 2003 Polar Flats 1788. I contacted Godfrey Marine (which owns Polar) but they were not able to help me as they stopped making this boat in the mid 2000's. I have attached a photo and a diagram of what I am looking for. Since I am willing to replace all of it, it does not have to match but, it does have to mount the same way. The rub rail has a "slot" all along the backside of it that fits over a flange on the side of the hull. It screws in from below and it appears that some kind of adhesive/sealant was used as well. I am looking on the internet but thought I'd pick all the brains on CF. If you know of anything that would work, I would appreciate the info. Thanks!!

Going fishing Friday. After that, I'll be on dry land for the rest of the holiday weekend. It is a shame that there are so many yahoos on the water that you feel like you should stay off the water during holiday weekends. Money seldom buys brains or common sense.

If you are putting it on a boat you will have for a while and unless you are on a tight budget, I'd go with stainless. Just my .02 worth.

So many boats, so little time. That is a nice problem to have. I honestly don't know where I would start. They would all be a treat for me. Driving an 03 Polar Flats would make any of those boats be like going from sedan to a sports car.

Running a boat that gets real skinny means you are going to get wet. It is a trade off but the previous posters are right, you can get wet in almost any boat given the right (wrong) conditions. I run a flats boat and love the freedom it gives me to explore shallow marsh creeks, etc.. but, running across open water, especially in moderate chop can be an adventure.

I have been restoring an old fiberglass jonboat for a couple of months now. The boat is almost done and soon all I will need to do is find a good used galvanized trailer and get all the paperwork straightened out. I have a 1986 15 hp Mariner that has about 20 - 30 hours on it and had not been started in over 10 years (been sitting under my house). I took it to a boat shop here in town owned by a couple of guys I went to high school with. $103.20 later they had that sucker running. I will soon have another boat that I won't have near enough time to use but, can a man ever have too many boats?

Oh we will definitely be back, the whole family had a great vacation down there!

I bought some and have spooled it but have yet to get the opportunity to use it........................dang kids and all their sports!

Hey Seabob, I just noticed that you live in WW. My family and I spent a week down there in early April, we had a great time. They are all ready to go back. That river is beautiful.

Thanks guys. I monkeyed around with it this weekend, cleaning out the fuel filter, etc. Pulled the rope while my son held a plug and still got spark (yeah, I know, that was kinda mean but he learned a lesson). Hoping that is a good sign. I'll see if I can actually get it to fire up after I replace the impeller.

I commented on another thread about the pace being slower here and got a semi-smart-azz comment (no, I am not thin-skinned or overly sensitive). I was merely stating my OPINION, an opinion is what one person thinks about something, not fact, truth or anything else. I have often wondered why there is not more "action" over here. This is not a complaint, just my observation. By action, I do not mean all of what goes on at other sites, there just seems to be fewer posts at a slower pace. I do the majority of my posting on a local site because I know a lot of folks there and because it is local info. I spend some time on that other site but seem to be doing less as the overall tone is not what I am generally looking for on a fishing/boating website. I am not looking to become a prolific poster, I generally post when I am looking for information, expertise or opinions on something. I post when I find something particularly useful or funny or when I have strong feelings. I am a recreational fisherman/boater with a small CC that has no knowledge of off-shore fishing and limited knowledge of big boats so I try to stay in areas where I actually have something to contribute. Otherwise, I read a lot but may not post. I think this is a great site and will try to contribute more in the future.
