hyd steering problem

Recommended Posts

I installed an upper station on my boat using a Sea Star and everything works just fine till I get up to speed. Then turning to the right gets screwey. Most times it takes 6 0r reveloutions of the wheel before the steering picks up and turns the boat. sometimes it works ok for a few turns. Turning to the left works fine. Turning at a slow plan or off plane works fine. No sign of fluid leak. Ran a compensation line and have a vented fill cap on the top. Blead it again yesterday, same problem. Any ideas?? Thanks

Dual station installs, as well as dual cylinders, take a LOOONNNGGG time to bleed. Be very patient. When properly bled, any movement of the wheel will cause the motors to move. If this isn't the case, bleed again. Time consuming, yes. But, in reality, it allows you to have a few more brewskis! :1992_beer_cheer:

Generally, if there is air in the system the steering will be mushy in both directions and all speeds.

You say the problem is only when you turn right at speed. Is it only in the upper station or at both the upper and the lower? If it's only at the upper it may be a problem with the helm pump. There a small valves that open and close on demand and if you get some contamination in the system it may not allow the valves to operate correctly.

correct, air in the system does not only affect one way, you have a problem, what it is will require some fooling around (or a trip to the shop) any dirt at all in the oil/system will be diaster and can cause symptoms similar to what you mention, but it is very difficult to fully clean out the entire system.
