61lb Amberjack

Recommended Posts

Here is the video of the 61lb AJ I caught...well...I hooked, tried to hand it off to my sister, but it was too much for her. Her son then took it until his belt slipped ( I bark'd at him about not using the right "fighting technique"...he is my nephew...it's allow'd LOL) while I'm putting a fighting belt on...

Any way here is the link to the video:

Congratulations for the catch!

Big amberjacks are my reference target in my area and, modestly, I'm one of the kings of them...

I traveled for fishing blues sometimes, but a 70 lb amberjack in the Mediterranean sea is way more tricky than a 200lb blue in the Caribbean, due to the shallow and rocky bottom.

Amberjacks are very clever fishes, trying everything to make themselves free against the bottom or submerged structures, like wrecks or pillars. In the video you post, you risked a lot staying so close to those submerged pillars. A 200 yds run is very common for an amberjack trying to reach something on which to rub the line or the hook...

great a.j. I had to do a replay after seeing the fin come up in the back ground . caught it with the corner of my eye the first time & thought it was a shark turned out to be a dolphin.

That's a hog :2403_worshipper:

We don't target them unless we have friends from the North come down to fish. I enjoy watching the look on the face of a fresh water fisherman as the fight begins. Reef Donkey indeed!
