Ford F-250 Gas Mileage

Recommended Posts

Here's the truck:

2001 F-250 - 160,000 miles

5.4L V8

4.10 Rear End

Automatic Transmission

Round trip from North of Boston to Long Island, NY.

Total miles Round trip using Odometer - 534

Total miles Round trip using Google maps - 532

Filled tank prior to leaving, refill in NY (17.2 gal.), and

upon return at original gas station (15.4 gal.)

Total miles (534)/Total gas used (32.6 gals.) = 16.38mpg.

Now here's the wierd thing. On the way down I kept the speed

at 70-75mph and burned 17.2 gals. for 15.5mpg. On the way back I

was in a hurry and did 80+ most of the way and only burned

15.4 gals. for 17.3mpg.

The faster I drive, the better MPG I get. What would my MPG be if

I did 120? And more importantly, is saving the planet a valid defense

for a Reckless Driving Arrest?

LOL!!!!

You must have been in the engines RPM "sweet spot" coming back.

If I run E10 in my 2007 Expedition 5.4, I get 18 mpg, if I run REAL GAS, I get 24.

ETHANOL IS NOT THE SOLUTION.

Well, obviously, it is downhill from Long Island to Boston! Sometimes you have to look for the obvious answers.

I see similar mileage on my '06 F-150 with the 5.4L and 3.73 rear on the highway. Well, not the 17.2 but the 15.5. At times I wish I had gone with the 3.55 and gotten a few more mpg. Yep, the ethanol cost me about 1 mpg but I can't say exactly how much because our area went to E10 before I had run very many tanks through the truck.

My old F-150 with the 4.6L got a couple of mpg better mileage in the mountains of TN than it did on the FL Turnpike. I never could figure that one out, but it happened every time we passed through the mountains. Maybe a mile isn't as long at higher elevations?

My guess for your improved mileage is that you didn't do as much slowing down/speeding up for traffic. That really kills my mileage.

I'm in Welder's camp.

'06 Dodge 2500 Mega-Cab diesel 4x4

Running back and forth to work (about half highway, half urban) I've been averaging just a hair over 21 mpg. On the highway, more like 24~25. Haven't towed with it enough to give a figure on that.

As far as brands go, I'd rather be Cummin than Stroking! :1143_neener_neener_neener:
