what would you buy?

I know most of you are outboard people; I am not.

20ish year old crusiers both chevy power, dual engines.

one purportedly has 200 (yes 200) hours vdrives, the other 1000 sterndrives.

Assuming either one is accurate, which would you buy?

Honestly, I would buy neither.

My answer is based on assuming this is saltwater use.

A 20 year old engine that only saw 10 hours/year use scares the crap out of me

A sterndrive with 1,000 hours equally scares the crap out of me (above and beyond my personal detest for sterndrives).

Thats a hard one to call. I would definately have both checked out by your local shop though.

Obviously not, look at your screen name.

Anyway, I think with either, you would probably be looking at repairs, albeit different types. The I/Os, well you have a whole bunch of potential things that could be needed, especially engines/gimbals/outdrives. 1000 hours, even at excellent maintenance, is a lot of hours.

The V-drive I/Bs, on the other hand, well, you are probably looking at seals and the tranny, plus repacking the stuffing boxes.

Given the choice, I'd go with the I/Bs.

Yeah, I guess technically '######' is a derogatory term, tho you wouldn't know it because rednecks call each other rednecks all the time, like black people using the n word. They can, you can't.

ETA: but I guess it's not derogatory if more than one ###### lump up into a group, plural, rednecks.
