Sea Chest

Recommended Posts

I saw a 31T Con. on "the old site" for sale...the custom work on the boat and the ideas he has had are awesome..one of those was a "sea chest"...I could not figure it out from the pictures...could someone explain to me what it is and what the benefits are?

Thanks

A sea chest is basically a tank or container which draws seawater into it from one large thru-hull. That tank then feeds everything that needs water, such as livewells, washdowns, heads, etc. via individual hoses/pipes attached to the sea chest. The primary benefit, of course, is that you then only need one thru-hull and one valve to control incoming seawater. Makes for a neater and somewhat safer installation.

With the pumps mounted inside the sea chest, they tend to remain primed most of the time and run cooler. This leads to longer pump life.

In other threads on this subject, I have also read: One has greater flexibility in the types of pumps that can be used - not just live well pumps can be used. One thing I never thought of is a burp or pressure equalizer valve is needed on the well.

in my opinion, the major benefit of a sea chest is having one thru hull instead of a bunch of smaller ones all over the hull..... on the bigger boats its cool to see right through the bottom of the boat, and if you pull in a bag, you can pull it out from inside the boat!
