All my motors have been out of warranty (used) so no need to use the dealer. Thankfully with a good shop, the room to do the work and proper tools I can do most of my own repairs. Certainly I can do all of my maintenance items. "A manual is a good investment."

Since every boat I've owned has been 10 years old or older, I do my own. I always looked at it this way - There ain't no repair shop at sea, so I have to be able to do it myself.

Oil, lube, spark plugs, filters, Zincs, and such I do. I am getting ready to do water pumps for the first time on my own in 25 years (my dad and I used to do them with some regularity). Timing belts and valve inspections I let the mechanic do... I will be doing thermostats in the near future also...

I started doing my own last Fall. The boat/motor are 2000's

and I figure I can't do any worse than the mechanics. Spent

the $$$ on the manual and a torque wrench. I'm sure it takes

me longer than it should, but it's a TON cheaper and I know it's

getting done, and done right. In the past, I've had my doubts.

Do as much as I can time permitting. Admittedly though, sometimes I have to pony up to the yard just to have it done when I want to use the boat.
