Evinrude 140

I was trying to take the motor off of my boat this weekend, and the steering is froze. It is around an 88 model Evinrude 140. I want to try and salvage the steering cable because it is only about 3 years old, and was new when put on.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to free up the steering on this boat so I can take the motor off?

The cable is probably froze inside the steering tube. Get some PB Blaster and spray it liberally, then hit the non-cable side of the steering arm with a piece of wood. Once you break it free, keep working it back and forth and spraying it until it is friction free.

Once off, clean the steering cable thoroughly and the inside of the tube. For the tube, a shot cleaning kit with a wire brush, put it on a drill and go to town!!!

Grease it up good with marine green grease prior to re-assembly.

Had the very same issue with a Honda 90 on a Polar Skiff.

Dad gum Hotspot is smart! I used ATF instead of PB but the idea is the same. A light penetrating oil and then lots of .410 brush work will fix this. Good luck. Laird

After you are done, look for the steering tube that has a zerk fitting on it so you can routinely grease the tube.

Got it, a hammer a 2*4 and some PB Blasted, thanks for the help, I am going to try and fix the motor to learn and then sell it. It use to run but I believe it has a bad piston. Any ideas on where to get parts and or a service manual?
