Not enough boats.

Unless the guy who gaffed it is 8' tall I say BS. Sunday night I returned from La Paz, BCS. While there I caught a 39#13oz dorado, it was well over 4 feet long. My boatmate caught one 35#8oz and it was bigger than the video fish. One of our group got one that weighed 48# and was over 5 feet long. I'd put that beauty around 30 pounds. I'll post pics later if I can figure how. BTW, out here in the West we call it "Tall" cotton but it still means what we be doing while we're in it.

Friends of mine fished with the same guide the week before you. They got halibut of 92 and 141 pounds. They only caught a couple of salmon though. Salmon fishing has been very spotty so far this year almost everywhere in AK. I'm towing my boat from the SF Bay Area to northern-most Washington, Seiku, next week. We'll be fishing the Strait of San Juan de Fuca for salmon and halibut. Thanks for your post.

If you're fishing the Columbia I assume you're going for over-size sturgeon. I've done it 3 times and have caught 6 sturgeon between 300 and 500 pounds. I don't think a reel with a level wind will hold up to the huge drag pressures you have to put on those fish. I would go with a lever drag reel without it. Are you a member of the Coastside Fishing Club?

In light of the recent disaster involving the football players I would be interested in an ACR personal epirb, specifically the model with the built-in gps.

Those huge Penns have limited use these days. With the arrival of small diameter Spectra line they aren't necessary. I just sold on Ebay an Intl 80 that was unused and in it's box, I got $435 for it.

Menzies, To answer your question, I took the 13 week course offered by the USCG Aux. I was amazed at how much I didn't know. After taking it I realised how little other boaters know.

This morning I called Bennett Trim Tabs to report a problem with a leaking actuator. Great job on releasing the marlin! Unless you really like the touristy aspect of Cabo then I suggest you try one of the resorts in the East Cape area about 40 miles up the peninsula on the Sea of Cortez side.
