  1. Let's assume the worst. If the carbs are gunked up and need rebuilding, you'll pay about 2-250 each to have that done with a maybe thirty day warranty on the work. I would recommend going with new carbs at that point because you can never be sure with an old carb...some are just plain no good. A new carb such as an Edelbrock 750 CFM marine ( which is a darn fine piece of kit if you ask me) can be had at the best price on earth here. These come ready to bolt on and even have a DVD that helps explain it all. You should replace the fuel filter elements as mentioned and also the supply hoses. If they are original to the boat they should have been replaced 5 years ago. Be sure to use only Shields Flex Acol hose or even Russell braided if you are a freak like me. In the tank there may be sediment. You will want to hire a specialist who will come and clean out the tanks removing all the gunk. Prices vary but the Marina can point you in the right direction. Worst case scenario is $700 for new carbs, a few hundred for new hoses and filters, and if needed another few hundred for tank cleaning. Doesn't include labor. One thing that you should do as the new owner is have every rubber part on the engines replaced; belts, water hoses, exhaust hoses, impellers, whatever. In addition you'll want new circulating water pumps, new thermostats, all new hose clamps. Replace the distributor cap, rotor, points (if equipped and condensor), as well as new spark plugs and wires. Replace every fluid: hydraulic, coolant, lube. What this gets you is a maintenance baseline. Sure they said it was maintained by the marina before. Pah! worthless info. You do not want another incident like the one you just had. Thankfully it was merely bothersome and not life threatening. Once you know that everything has been done you can begin to track regular items like oil filter changes etc. Expensive, yes! That's boating my friend.
  2. Probably not the motor. They get such little use and they're sealed up pretty good. My bet is a loose connection. Unfortunately most boat builders bury the trim pump where you can't get to it. I've seen 'em put inside a sealed off bulkhead. Anyway, good luck and let us know how it goes.
  3. The thing about putting images into a name is that they can make the name difficult to read from any distance. The example above surely would be fine at the dock but if you're trying to make out the name through binoculars in a roll, it would look like The I Bright Side or something. There's also a competing manufacturer's logo on the rear quarter taking up room. Would that stay?
  4. Now I just get a click in each direction of the switch. That's a good thing. It means that the solenoids are getting power from the switch. Now the only thing to find out is why the motor isn't getting power. Could be a bad fuse, bad connection or bad solenoid. Could be a bad motor, but it would probably fail in only one direction first.
  5. The poeple who buy cats are the same type who buy Subarus; They don't care how friggin' ugly it is because it performs so well.
  6. HDRIs really shine in my 3D animation software. I can shoot a room and use the HDR pic to adjust the lighting of the scene without any actual 3D lights. Then I place the objects in the scene and use the HDR as a reflected image. makes things look so real.
  7. I hope you are replacing it with hydraulic steering. The parts diagram is here. Hope it helps
  8. Try an art supply store for "One Shot" sign painter's enamel. It comes in many colors, is easy to apply and very durable.
  9. I don't understand. Wireless trailer lights? How do they get power? From Professor Dumbledore.
  10. There is no scientific evidence that proves that bonding or any other methodology reduces or increases the chance of a lightning strike or whether the strike will be less harmful due to bonding. Lightning is unpredictable. It doesn't really care about bonding and cones of protection. Do whatever you think is best.
  11. You can find me around the Little Choptank, Taylor's Island, any mid-Bay gunkhole.
  12. Should be the last one on the last page. Impressive only for the amount of work I put into it so far. Here
  13. 1970 John Allmand Ticonderoga 23' Back in March 2009: Still in progress with the total refit.... Seagull at the ready! 14. My boat moves about 771 miles every hour, even though it is parked in the barn.
  15. One of the most dangerous sources of pollution that is choking the Bay is runoff from Chicken waste products: manure, feathers etc. The chicken producers have been very good at killing any legislation that would force them to do something about cleaning up their act, so the Bay continues to suffer. This is just a part of the problem of course. With a Watershed that extends from the Adirondacks to the Blue Ridge across 10 states, the effort to coordinate between all interested parties is staggering. I was only trying to be glib with my previous statement.
  16. The Bay is beiing ignored just as it is by our legislators who don't want to piss off Mountaire and Perdue.
  17. Looking at this pic: I would recommend that you replace the wing nuts with stainless nuts and lockwashers. Also I'd recommend adhesive lined shrink tubing on the lugs to seal up the joint between the insulation and the crimp. In addition, the wet cell battery should be in a battery box. Also, cap the naked terminals.
  18. I posted a very short note on THT saying that I was moving over here and now there are three pages of responses. The gist of all of them is something along the lines of, 'see ya a-hole'. This is exactly why I had to quit posting over there.
