  1. We don't refer to them around here as mahi....this isn't Hawaii.... It doesn't keep the restaurants and grocery stores from calling them that. Many hear the word dolphin and think you are talking about Flipper. Just kidding....call them whatever you want. If you can't catch a dolphin when you fish offshore, then it is truly a slow day. In SC, you can usually start to catch them in March--the hot bite is usually from mid-late April though late June or early July. Late Summer usually brings the dinks and peanuts, which are from the Spring spawn. I have caught them in as close as 13 miles offshore, but up in NC they come in considerably closer. They are voracious predators, and will eat just about everything....I have pulled bottle caps, Christmas tree tinsel, pull-tops from vienna sausages, and bits of plasitc out from their stomachs. They also grow extremely fast--if you catch a 30-lb dolphin it can be only a year old. They are also thankfully prolific, reaching sexual maturity in 4-5 months and females can spawn every 2-3 days during season and release as many as 66,000 eggs per spawing event. If you are targeting dolphin, look for any floating objects....weedlines, trash, tree logs, boards, etc. They will usually be hanging out under such flotsam and will readily eat just about any offering, from trolled and cast baits, to jigs and cut bait. They'll also be hanging around temperature and current breaks. Sometimes it's hard to keep them off your hooks.....especially the dinks like TT1 said. I have saved many a skunk by catching dolphin....and they are one of my favorite fish to eat as well.
  2. Knock on wood....no problems with the new Storm so far.
  3. Also posted on the Carolinas Forum: http://reelboating.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=710 The more exposure it gets the better.
  4. I must say that was a pretty good performance Keith gave after getting a little bump on the head..... All in all, I think all the captains are hamming it up a bit. You will never convince me Phil didn't know he would not be able to fish long before that "last minute call" at the dock. I think the first 2 seasons were the best.
  5. No offense taken. Based on the last time I bought a car, I'd agree with your summation 100% when it comes to some salesmen. It was sad to ask a question and not hear a knowledgeable answer. Mostly all I heard was BS trying to steer me away from the subject at hand. As a whole, most people in sales are looked upon as untrustworthy, unknowledgeable, and pushy. And I knew this before I started my current career.....just a glutton for punishment, i guess. KillerB, My industry is suffering like so many others. The successful sales person doing what I do is having to reinvent themselves.....including reviving the art of the cold call. I make it a point to see at least 5 prospective customers a week that I don't currently do business with. While the vast majority will not respond as I like, I have found that they will remember my name when it comes to them making a change. I know many who are having an extremely difficult time doing exactly this. That makes my job easier, because they will not be my competition for long.
  6. I had a '02 Conquest 295--the old hull design. It had a terrible ride, but was laid out wonderfully and was a great boat to fish. I hated the fact that they put such a poorly designed hull on this boat. Late '03 and on models have the redesigned hull and I have heard the ride is improved, but not by much. My 295 ran in the lower 40's WOT with twin 225HP Optimax. Pretty quick for such a heavy hull. If you like to fish on rough days, buy the Pursuit.
  7. Well, got the new one and got everything transferred over. In addition to the problems with the old phone, it suddenly stopped ringing...incoming calls were going directly into voicemail. I just talked to a customer who switched all his office staff over to Storms....he is having the same problem I did originally. Also, I have some other friends with Blackberry Curves with All-Tel, and they are having the same glitches as well. Blackberry screwed the pooch on this one royally. All this junk happening with BB should be good for I-Phone. I hope someone from Blackberry is reading this.
  8. I don't know of anyone running a headboat out of Charleston. Try up the coast in Little River or Calabash. You may want to post this on Charlestonfishing.com. Someone there may know of a boat there, but the last I heard there are none.
  9. Another example of a decision not based on sound science: http://www.safmc.net/News/NewsReleases/New...06/Default.aspx For those who fish for ARS off the South Atlantic coast, your rights to enjoy this fishery are in grave danger. The SAFMC will likely ban the taking of all ARS by line or spear this Summer. I have posted a link to an online petition to let SAFMC know how this will affect many who make their living through the recreational and commercial fishery that our federal government seeks to close. http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/sig...i?4ourARS&1 This action will created a negative and unnecessary impact on both the commercial and recreational segment of the fishery. Please take a few moments out of your day and sign the petition and let your voices be heard. For those who live in the Charleston areas, the following businesses also have petitions at their locations: Barton and Burwell MTP Haddrell's Point MTP And WA Charleston Angler WA Carolina Rod and Gun West Marine MTP Bradley's Liquor Store (Ben Sawyer Blvd, MTP) New York Butcher Shop (Ben Sawyer Blvd, MTP) Brabham's Liquor Store (Coleman Blvd, MTP) Burris Liqour (Downtown) Forsberg's Wine & Spirits (JI, Folly RD) BC Liquor & Wine (Sol Legare, Folly RD) Folly Rd Tackle (JI, Folly RD) Henry's Tackle (MTP) Crosby's Seafood (Folly Rd) Backman's Seafood (Sol Legare) Wando Seafood (Shem Creek) MTP Seafood (Shem Creek) Raul Seafood (Shem Creek) Remember, it's all about numbers.....the more who sign, the louder the hue and cry will be.
  10. Should have gone ahead and taken out the last pirate. What's one more dead skinny? His prison time will probably be a cakewalk compared to his normal life.
  11. The ones who aren't worth a spit fall under this description. Don't lump "all salesmen" under it, though. My chosen career is in sales....my bread and butter is in repeat business from a select few customers. So, I'd better know my stuff about what I sell, because if I can't answer a customer's question, he'll go to my competition to get the answer. I've been doing this for over 15 years, so I must be good at it. While I may agree with your statement to a degree, please don't use such a broad brush to describe "all salesmen".
  12. The new one will be here Monday. I am hoping the tech was wrong about it having problems as well. Verizon has been about as helpful as I can hope....they are at the mercy of Blackberry with the glitches. On a different note, I am discouraged by so many new electronic devices being released without proper field testing beforehand. It seems the manufacturer would rather have the newest, hottest bling out and risk pissing people off than making sure the bugs are ironed out before it hits the general public. I have gone on BB's website and read about many of the problems experienced by Storm users on their forum, so they have to be aware of what's going on. I will see how things go when I get the replacement next week.
  13. Well, It happened 3 times this morning. I made a trip to the local Verizon retail store and had a long conversation with a service technician. It seems the Storm has an entire litany of problems: --will not ring or vibrate on incoming calls, VM's, text messages, or emails. --will suddenly lock up and only a battery removal/reinstall will remedy it. --will not allow outgoing calls to be made. --will go into hibernation(darkscreen)mode, and only a power down will unlock it. It will then reboot upon start-up--that's the problem I have. The technician told me they have been waiting for a new software version to correct all these problems for over a month. According to what BB has told them, the fix would be available shortly after the first of March. Well, here we are in early April, and no fix...... I had them order me a new unit, but the tech said that one would probably suffer from one or more of the glitches mentioned above. He was courteous, but I am totally frustrated with Blackberry right now. My concensus is--and the Verizon rep agreed--is they rushed the product to market without properly testing it. Trial by fire, so to speak. Well, if the replacement has any problems, I am gonna get something free for all my lost calls, pissed-off customers, and unnecessary down-time that have resulted from this debacle. Another really frustrating thing is the other unit I got on the two-for-one deal has performed flawlessly. I am thankful for that, since it's my wife's....I could only imagine the grief I would be experiencing if she had problems. She is not the high-tech type, and I have become the de-factor computer/cell phone guru in the house.....that's a scary thought, too. BLACKBERRY, get OFF your dead ass and FIX THIS THING!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. Anyone else who own's one? I cashed in on a deal Verizon was having a month ago....buy one for $99.99 and get another free. My wife is now a crackberry addict, and I like mine OK. But....... I have been having a recurrent problem with it locking up. The screen won't wake up, and I can receive calls, but not answer or make them. I have to cycle the power and wait for it to re-boot. Happened 3 times today, and I have lost count on how many times it's happened since I got it. I called technical services with my carrier, and they say it is a problem that is known, and the fix will be out with the next software update. Only, they can't tell me when that will be. I can ask for a new one, but since it is a software glitch, they said the replacement can also be afflicted. I have been cut off mid-conversation with customers, and I am just about fed up.
  15. Your answer is here: http://www.tsa.gov/what_we_do/layers/twic/...tm#what_is_twic May as well call it a tax.....the only difference is the fed doesn't get the money.
  16. This sounds like a practical joke that can turn ugly very quickly..... I would let him know first thing Monday AM what's going on. Then prepare yourself accordingly.....payback is hell......
  17. The big 5-0 today. I wonder where the hell the last 30 years went....and I know the next will go by even faster. The party is tonight....ribs and BBQ chicken, roasted vegetables, Firefly, margaritas, cold beer, and cosmopolitans for the ladies. Damn, it's good to be king......
  18. Reel pleasure: I was thinking maybe a knife would be good to have. Definitely...... If you go far offshore or frequent areas outside shipping lanes, a desalinator to make drinking water from seawater. Smaller units can be had for a couple of hundred dollars, and they take up much less space than trying to carry water. The secret to ditch bags is to keep them small as possible.....you don't want to be carrying a suitcase around.
  19. The worse was the maiden voyage with my Black Watch. First time I fished it, I lost the transmission on the port engine during a fight with a marlin. The good thing is we got the fish to the boat---hence my avatar, and it was a clean release of a healthy fish. We ran back in one one engine--took over 8 hours to get back to the dock. In comparison to many accounts, it's not a real catastrophy. The mate choking on a bait fish was what I would call a catastrophy.
  20. I have noticed that a couple of the troublemakers seem to have come here from the old place. I refer to them as such because they seem to come into or start threads just to create a dramatic impact or bash someone. Hopefully they will become part of the "few hundred" that Wiley spoke of. Once it's evident this forum does not tolerate it, they will move on. As far as the other place goes, the current administration doesn't want to limit the BS....it creates more hits on thier website....and that's all they care about.
  21. Price point boats......low-end hardware, mediocre workmanship, poor resale.....I could go on, but you get my drift.
  22. I agree this is the biggest load of crap that's come rolling off Capitol Hill lately. Take me, for example.....I got my OUPV purely for educational purposes.....I have no intent on using it for anything other than to adorn the wall in my study. Now they say I have to get a TWIC in order to renew it? Piss on them.....I will let it expire and use the credentials to line the bottom of my cat's litterbox. The way they(Homeland Defense) are approaching this, half of the charter captains out there must be card-carrying Al Qaida....
  23. I have never seen rivets hold anything for long on a boat. Especially on something that's subject to regular use, like a gas support for a lid. I would try to use regular self-tapping SS screws bedded in 5200 first, and see how that holds. If it doesn't, I would go to an anchoring system like a toggle bolt if you can't get in behind where you are mounting the shocks.
