Kaye Pearson, the expansive entrepreneur, philanthropist, world-class angler and showman who put his hometown on the global maritime map with an annual boat show, died of cancer at his Fort Lauderdale in his home Saturday, his family said. He was 68. Mr. Pearson founded Show Management in 1976 to operate the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, growing the event from 200 boats at its start to what industry officials say is the world's largest boat show. The event now draws about 120,000 visitors a year, with 1,700 boats and nearly 1,400 exhibitors. Its sales total about $1.5 billion and it has a local economic impact of about $550 million. "Kaye was a marine industry icon and champion who left a lifetime of achievement behind him," said Frank Herhold, director of the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, which contracted Pearson to run the show. "Through his leadership, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show has become the world's largest boat show, bringing global recognition to our community." Mr. Pearson sold Show Management about two years ago and, with other investors, was developing the island of Chub Cay in the Bahamas. "That was his dream, I guess, to have an island and enjoy life," Cheri Pearson said. Besides his wife, Mr. Pearson is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Moore; a brother, Jerry; a sister, Janet Powell; and a granddaughter, Alexandria Moore. A private burial service will be held later this week, and a memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. April 4 at the Bahia Mar Hotel & Yachting Center.
