Ap Choice...

Recommended Posts

For my twin outboard 28 foot center console it is widely regarded that the new Garmin GHP 10 (old TR-1) is arguably the best choice. However, I have a Navnet vx/2 (which I like alot btw) and I am wondering how much functionality I would give up by not getting a Furuno AP. For example would having a dedicated AP add back some of the features that the AP itself doesnt carry?

What would be your pick for my 28ft cc with twin yam f225's?

Garmin AP, Furuno AP or Simrad?

Anyone have reliability issues with the garmin? If so were they instalation issues or product defects?

Thanks for your time.

I have a simrad on my parker and the 2 dive boats I work on. I the ones at work are ap-10's and the one on the parker is an ap-25 all use the gryro compass which is great when it doesnt have any metal near it. Tool boxes really screw with it fyi. I really like the simrads though they are reliable for me and really user friendly. I have worked with their tech support in the past too who were great. Simrad is all I've used but I've been real happy with them.

I was in the exact same situation. The Furuno will not speak to the Garmin. I ended up with a 5212, which is actually smaller in foot print than the 10" Furuno and a Garmin AP.

I detested my Furuno, except as a bottom machine. For navigating point to point it is IMO useless, as compared to Garmin in terms of usefulness and ease.

Installation was a masterpiece by a local knowledgable vendor. AP is awsome.
