I am in the market for a new fishfinder for a tinny. I already have a GPS plotter so a half decent fishfinder is what I need. I will be fishing to depths no more than 30m, in predominantly salt water. I have set my budget to a maximum $600.

Could somebody please suggest something that would suit my needs? I have been looking at the following models:

- Garmin Echo 550c - dual beam wide angle and high res. My main concern with this unit is that they only talk about fresh water, not sure how effective it is in salt water. Are the wide beam dual transducers suited to salt water?

- Lowrence elite 5x DSI - looks OK..

Also, has anyone previously purchased any of these from the states? Seem a bit cheaper than present Garmin with flytomap apps, what I saw at BCF. Are there any problems with American fishfinders?

Many thanks and look forward to your replies !
