New Jersey Boat Builders Hit Rough Water

Recommended Posts

We (Proline) have been basically shutdown since early November. A friend of mine at Viking, was furloughed until April 1, that was from last December. Hope he's back at work now. Was in the middle of building the new 84.

The boat building business is not a good business to be in right now. Just ask the folks at Whaler, Wellcraft, Pursuit, Donzi, Angler, Everglades...the list goes on and on... :(

I live about 15 minutes from viking. got to know a few at the top there. They should have the staying power. The big problem is the repeat customers cant sell their older boats for a new one. Thats only a few? and the rest of the world is on a holding pattern or worse.

IIRC, Viking shut down briefly during the 1991 recession, then opened up again.

You probably know the story better than I do.

Just so this thread isnt a complete downer, I am a part time rep at Judge Yachts and we are actually ahead of last couple of years in number of boats being built. The crew is working a 40hours a week (4 10 hour days). All boats are built to order...
