What will over charging battery do?

Recommended Posts

2002 Four Winns H190 open bow with a 5.0 volvo penta V8 and outdrive. I put a large battery charger on for 20 min. When i turn the over the motor to start it, the motor runs for a second then shuts off and my beeping alarm system does not beep anymore when the key is turned 1 click before starting the boat. Is it possible I burned something up such as a relay possibly to cause these problems?

Yep, you NEVER use a battery charger on A battery while it is still connected to your Alternator , you either make sure ALL of your Battery switches are in the OFF position or take the battery out of the system [ disconnected ] .

On board chargers are used after you turn the battery switch to the ALL OFF POSITION .

You will want to have your Alternator checked , you may have burnt a Diode .

I have 2 batteries in my boat and a Sportsman SE battery charger/banks inside the boat. When we go fishing at night, I connect a 1,000 VA generator to the battery charger and run all electronics on the boat: bait well pump, stereo, flood lights, underwater led lights, etc. while we bottom fish, all night. Zero problem so far. Could I be doing something wrong? By the way, the switch of the engines are off and the engines and off.

Welder,

Not true. In fact, when I used to program Suzuki SMIS gauges, if I didn't have the engines running, I had to turn the charger on to give the batts enough voltage to "burn in" the engine parameters to the data modules in the engine interface harnesses...

Troup,

You have an issue to where "something" is telling the engine to shut down, usually an engine shutdown circuit such as exhaust temp, oil pressure, etc. Even with a fried diode in an alternator, a fully charged batt will start a motor and she'll keep running until the draw on the batt doesn't allow it to run anymore. But an almost immediate shutdown? That tells me a shutdown circuit is getting a signal it shouldn't...
