Crabbing in the Keys

Recommended Posts

Here in SC, we crab for blue crabs. My kids love catching and my wife loves eating them. We will be in the Key Largo area in July. Can you or is it worth while to crab for blues in that area? We are staying right on the water near a mangrove creek so it would be great if the kids could sit on the dock and crab and Mom and dad could supervise while enjoying a libation.

Thanks

Never seen blue crabs while down there but that's not to say they ain't there. Lobster and stone crabs are more the norm in the Keys. Lobster season doesn't open until the first week in August normally but catching them is totally different than blue crabs. Know the regs if you decide to try and catch anything.

There are a bunch of local eateries in the Key Largo area and a few places where you can purchase seafood in bulk. I can't remember the name of the place but on the Atlantic side just as you get on Paradise Key which is just South of Key Largo there is a seafood place where you can buy fresh catch at a reasonable price. Turn left at the first light after the bridge then turn left down what I would call an access road that parallels A1A.

Have fun down there. We probably aren't going this year due to other commitments and it's killing my wife.

Yes, from what I understand, blue crabs are out down there. I have been lobstering before but unfortunately we will be leaving about the time the season opens. Thanks for the info on the seafood place, I hope we won't need to go there but nice to have a backup plan.
