Aside from size is there a difference? Should you buy the bigger one because it's better if it fits?

Thank you in advance..

Can you expound on that?

A group 27 battery is about 2 inches longer (about 12 inches) and about 20 amp hours larger than a group 24. If it fits in your battery hold down, IMO bigger is better. I have even thought about going from 27s to 31s for my center console.

Deeply discharging a battery is what kills it. A larger battery with more capacity will be discharged less so in theory it should last longer. However, if you don't discharge your battery, i.e.-you don't spend time on the hook with accessories on, the smaller group 24 will probably serve you just as well.

On the subject of Interstates, I know a lot of people who swear by Interstate, but I never had one last as long as I thought it should.

i'm a Deka guy myself, but brand names to me are less important than battery type. these days, i wouldnt use anything but an AGM battery. the technology of the old lead acid battery is somewhat ancient. AGM's will last longer, they dont leak, they dont require maintenance, and they dont explode nearly as often as a lead acid battery.

if you wanna save a few bucks on your car battery, put a lead acid in your car. i wouldnt skimp on a battery for your boat though, its far too important.

hope that helps!

PS i agree with the above comment, if you can fit a 27 over a 24 put in a 27.

The one thing that Interstate does not include in their specs is the Reserve Capacity. If you intend to use this as the starting battery you should find out if the battery has the minimum reserve capacity recommended by your outboard manufacturer. For instance Yamaha's minimum RC is 182 minutes. There are no group 24 batteries I know of that meet that. In fact, there aren't many group 27s that meet that. Deka designed a battery to Yamaha specs when Yamaha came out with their HPDIs and 4 strokes.

Read your outboard maker's manual and look for a battery that meets their requirements. I like having a dedicated starting battery and a separate deep cycle battery for my electronics. Old school wet cell batteries work for me. I have never had one explode. I do have to add water, but that's not much work on my part.
