Hydraulic steering, dual station question

What happens if there isn't a compensation line between the helms? The steering isn't stiff, isn't "bumpy" or rough, seems to be OK. I have found that it is there to allow air to escape from the lower helm but, if it is not there what will happen?

I have installed many a dual-station Teleflex system, unfortunately, I have always run the compensating line as that is what is specified in the install manual. Also changed out the vented plug for a non-vented one at the lower helm and made sure there was a vented plug in the upper helm.

I will be contacting Teleflex engineering/CS this afternoon on another matter. I'll ask him about this one also.
