spinning rod advice

Looking to upgrade my penn 560 slammer/ med action 6' 6"ugly stick combo with a spinning rod with better backbone. Looking at trevala or saltiga, would like a rod to throw 2-5 ounces and be strong enough to set a hook on a big blue or bass. any help. Wouldn't mind upgrading the reel also but don't want to bust the bank . will use to throw plugs, snag bunker, and hopefully catch bass

Your list is right on...you will be amazed when you get out of the Ugly Stick fiberglass game. There are some really awesome graphite rods that will complement the Slammer. Since the Slammer is heavy, I would not spend too much time/effort trying to go with a light rod.

For chucking plugs and blue/bass fishing, I would go to at least 7' 6". You will gain so much more distance and control over fish. Check out Lamiglas (like theInshor Classic or the Tri-flex series).

I have been very satisfied with St. Croix rods. Their good lines are made in the US, they stand behind them if you have any problems, and they are nicely finished. I am half way through upgrading all of my spinning rods to St. Croix and have added four of their casting rods as well.

I have been using a Trevala for a year. I bottom fish for Red Snapper with it. I also use it to fish the big snook at Stewart Fl. It's a very good rod with lots of backbone.
