When do you know you're a captain?

When you're on the boat or doing boat's business you are entitled to be addressed as "Captain." It's just a courtesy title though. Some people get off on it, but really it's just a nautical way of saying "Hey you, boat operating person!"

Unless... The boat is a tender belonging to another vessel. Then the title is "Coxswain."

If you have a license you can use it instead of Mr/Miss/Mrs (etc...) in any social situation. The exception to that is if you have a license that says "Captain" but perform a different function on the vessel, then it's bad etiquetted to be addressed as "Captain."
