Evinrude Motor Info Needed

Recommended Posts

You should go to evinrude.com and look thru there parts break down pages

They have some of the most detailed parts list of any web site I've ever seen

Also if you determine to go ahead and work on it your self then get a factory manual

One other site that has a wealth of info, especially for Erudes is iboats.com

The sell parts so no forum for sales but the are a great bunch of guys with info on there forums

They have manufacturer specific sub forums and have given me a huge amount of info on my E 140

Thanks for all the help!

I am mainly trying to fix the motor to learn, and to get some money out of it.

I probably will be replacing it with an E-tec 90, or a verado.

I like the Evinrude because it's white and will match the boat, but that black verado is NICE!

We will see, I am still early in the motor purchasing phase. I still have alot of gelcoat work to do.

Keep the comments coming! I will update when I have more info.

I am getting a repair manual, and a compression tester this weekend. If I have enough time (and no snow) I will post updates.

I like the Seloc manuals. They don't try to cover as many different motors as the Clymers, and the pictures/illustrations are better. Still not as good as the factory manuals, but a heck of a lot less money..

It is NOT hard to get parts for an '82 OMC product. Look on ebay, and go to iboats.com. I just got new coils and tune-up parts for my 4hp 1982 Rude on ebay for $52 delivered. Use the BRP website to identify part numbers and to view the exploded diagrams.

That being said, the engine knock strongly suggests a rebuild or new powerhead is in your future. You might want to consider a different project.

Check all the cylnders as suggested above for compression. I bet you find the knocking cylnder doing the compression check. If you have a problem with just one cylnder you can just rebuild it. Many people are against that saying while it's torn down do all of them.(That's what i would do if I were going to keep it.)Another option would be if you had a friend with a borescope and check all the cylnders.good luck
