Solenoids are simply coils that create a magnetic field in the presence of electrical current. I would guess that the original used a chassis ground, in other words one side of the coil was connected to the body of the solenoid. The new one has the coil electrically separate from the body so it needs two wires, one for positive input and one for ground. It shouldn't matter which wire goes to ground (chassis) and which goes to positive (reverse light circuit).
