Removing Oxidation

Recommended Posts

So what is the best way to remove oxidation?

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I had a military project which took me away from Boat Toys for a while.

Please visit www.boatoys.com and type in the search "Ardex Marine Compound 1000 for great "How we do it"

Please let me know if I can help...

Jeff

Yup he wants you to look at his website and then he probably wants to sell you a franchise. I wonder if he is a registered advertiser/vendor.

Hi Midway...

Not a registered advertiser as of yet. I have contacted Wiley for rates.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I had a military project which took me away from Art of Detailing and Boat Toys for a short while.

I am home now and can continue building the two companies.

Do you have any suggestions as to how I can work this site. I believe I can help people.

Thanks Midway...

Great, you ran off another one! I was all set to learn the art of detailing and now I'm sitting here with my buffer in my hand and no instructions. Thanks a lot! <img src="http://reelboating.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/angry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="angry.gif" />

While you are talking to Wiley I feel sure he will guide in the right way to do things. This is a good place for you to be and sponsor, everybody can help out. Good luck to you. Your first post looked like SPAM that is why you got the responses from us.

As I gander across boat yards and the docks I am saddened by the lack of gleaming boats with heavy oxidation and holograms that hinder the true beauty of of a boat. When in fact I know how to bring out and maintain the depth of gel-coat, Imron, Awlgrip and the likes.

Gel-coat seems to be the hardest of all to maintain. But, even with the best of surfaces scratching is inevitable. We have the way to solve those dilemmas. The work wont be easy (even for tiny boats) but the results will be astounding if you follow these instructions and consider doing the work on a Progressive Maintenance Plan.

Let us work with the worst possible scenario. A lightly scratched, oxidized, black streaked, mildewed topside and hull:

1. If you are rich, hire a reputable service to do the work.

2. If you are conservative and handy, then let Boat Toys show you how to get professional results by yourself.

3. You will need the following:

Softened Water with our Spot Free Water Softener

An array of Scrub Brushes (both soft and firm)

Ardex New Wave cleaner

Concrobium XT Eco-Wash

Barkeepers Friend

Mixing cup

Ardex Body Prep

Makita Buffing Machine

12 Gauge Locking Extension Cord

Terry Cloth Applicator or Chip Brush

Black Wool Pad

Pad Cleaning Spur

Ardex Marine 600 or 1000 Compound

The grade you choose will be based on your expert judgment or email a picture to me at jweiss@boatoys.com

4. Grab your mixing cup and stir up 4 parts water and 1 part Barkeepers Friend and hit all the rust and brown stains. No need to scrub hard, use a soft bug scrubber or tooth-style brush. The Barkeepers does all the work for you. by the time you get all the way around the boat those stains will disappear. Leave the powdery residue there.

5. Take your quart bottle of Concrobium XT Eco-Wash and spray all mildewed surfaces. Again let it sit, by the time you get around the boat the mildew will disappear.

6. We love softened water because it activates chemicals properly and rinses much better. This saves you money in supply waste and the chemicals work the way they should. With an array of brushes from a soft bug scrubber to long handled scrub brushes wash the boat from top to bottom using our New Wave Cleaner. If it's hot and sunny keep rinsing to remove any dirt or residue.

7. Thank goodness you used our Spot Free Water Softener. Now just let the boat air dry and get ready for real work. You will be working in three square foot areas.

8. Grab a one of our cut up T-shirt Rags and wipe your working area down with Ardex Body Prep. This will remove any remaining residue and de-wax the surface. Yes, you may buff non-skid.

9. With our terry cloth applicator or chip brush apply a moderated amount of compound using a 3' frame and spread evenly in between. Remember that the buffing pad will do half the work. There is no need to load up, as the compound will splatter and gunk up the pad. Just and even gentle spread or you will make your buffing time more arduous.

10. Now with our Makita Rotary Buffer and 12 gauge locking cord OVER YOUR SHOULDER, trigger the switch manually to spread the compound. When you feel that it is evenly spread lock the trigger and buff side to side, then up and down. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU KEEP THE PAD FLAT AND KEEP THE ROTARY BUFFER SPEED AT 1750 RPM! Anything higher will create swirls, holograms and make your polishing steps very difficult. Believe it or not improper buffing techniques can actually make surfaces look worse. Work slow, flat and steady.

11. After you are complete with your 3' section place the buffing machine on the floor. Turn up the speed and use our cleaning spur to thoroughly remove any remaining compound on the pad in preparation for the next 3 square foot area. Repeat steps 2 -11 until your arms fall off.

12. You are now complete with the prep stage. We will explain more throughout our site about removing stickers, striping, polishing, sealing and a host of other goodies. Noodle around the site and learn more about he joy of boat management.

13. Please do not hesitate to call us at 877-273-2017 with any tech questions.

Enjoy...
