E-tec Overheating Problem

Recommended Posts

We have twin 250 E-tecs and the starboard engine keeps shutting down when you go above 4k rpms. Now, the thing is you can run over 4k for about 2 minutes, or 30 seconds, depending on when the engine's sensor kicks you down. It is reading that the engine is overheating. Has anyone had this problem, or know why it would be overheating only above 4k?

Is there a transom mount transducer on that side of boat infront of that engine that might be interrupting water flow at high speed?

You didn't give much information for a specific answer.

Did this just start, and if so, what was done to the boat or motor prior to the problem?

What model number motor?

What is the water pressure at the various rpms?

What is the motor's history?

What boat?

Has the dealer done anything yet?

Which warning light comes on, the HOT or the CHECK ENGINE?

up

i know the person who owns the motors and he told me it was a grommet in the pickup that was collapsing and would not let enough water in at high speeds

Have a dealer connect to the EMM and see if only one bank is overheating. Could be a stuck thermostat. I had that condition and it turned out to be a scrunched stat gasket that was preventing full stat movement... a $.50 part and back in business. The diagnostics show temp by bank, so it was clear only one bank was hot.

BTW, a bad impeller would likely overheat at LOW RPM's, if anywhere, not just high, where it works as a centrifugal pump and it less sensitive to wear.

I will definitely put this to them. This is the second week it has been in the shop, so any suggestions will help. I will let you know what we come up with.
