humminbird 917c problem

A buddy has a Lund 18 foot Tyree. He has the Humminbird 917C combo fish finder/gps on it. It has not worked properly since he got it. He has tried 3 different transducers, but no help. He will be trolling at about 2 mph with the depth finder working well. Then, the depth will show to be 2 feet. Sometimes, the unit will find bottom again. Most times, he has to shut the unit down, then restart. It finds bottom immediately on restart. The transducer is clean. He has routed the lead from the transducer to the head away from any other electronics.

Has anyone had a similar problem that they have solved?
