  1. So me and the Mrs are out last week and catching a lot of nothing all day. Then we start landing what looked like thresher sharks. They were between 3 and 4 feet long each. 4 of them within a hour or so. Not big guys but fun to catch on light tackle, we were using 20lb line and small flounder hooks. The heaviest weighed in at only about 25 lbs but put up a nice fight on a light rod.

Anywho, as we were thinking about heading in, the Mrs. drops down a flounder rig and soon enough, the line starts tearing off the reel. She said she had another "thresher" so she went to town letting it run and drawing it in like the last few. As we see it break the surface a few yards away, she says it looked like a hammerhead, then it dives deep again. It took her about 15 minutes to get it in overall since she was working it real easy on light line but we got it to the side of the boat and sure enough, it was a hammer head. While deciding how to bring it on board or if we should even try, we eyed it up using spots on the boat and figure about 4'-5' long. Weight, no idea. It ended up biting through the monifiliment line and off he went. Probably better off for us as I have never dealt with a hammerhead and would be tossing him back anyway.

I never heard of hammerheads off of New Jersey before. We were both shocked. Even more so when you consider were we less than a half mile off the Avalon beach.

    Are these common around here?

Yes,they are quite common in New Jersey waters.Back in the 80's I chartered my boat out, specializing in sharks(when we had plenty of sharks around)and frequently caught hammer heads in late July/August.This year while fishing the ICW in AUG. I caught this little fellow.Never seen one this small in NJ before but 80deg. water will bring all sorts of new species to our waters.

  2. Bly.......we know each other from the BBsite. My son left with the boat early this am. Let me know if you are down this week too, maybe we can hookup, especially if the wind dies down and a run off-shore is in the cards.

Miller time, how long are you staying in Hatteras. We'll be coming down at the end of the week,Friday 22nd.I think Bly will be fishing a couple days with us.There will be 4-5 boats in our group so we'll have some info, tips, etc.

  3. Just wondering how many of us have completed a formal boating course, and which ones?

We have all (5 of us) done the 1 day USCGA course, and I have toyed with doing their navigation course ready for retirement in the islands. Just don't have the time or energy right now.

I took a formal course (I think it was 40hrs.)back in 1981 to obtain a USCG "six pack" license to charter my boat.Houston Marine Services administered the course and the USCG gave the test.I kept the license for 15 yrs.and decided I had enough of charters and let it go.Just last summer had to take an 8hr. boater safety course required by the State of New Jersey.I believe this was bought on by an incident where a fellow(B.F.)plowed is 40 something Viking through a fleet of fishing boats a couple miles off LBI N.J. killing 2 or 3 elderly fishermen. Most of us felt the boat was on auto pilot with no one at the helm.

  4. riffraff.....Nice boat, I had the exact same boat but it was a 1976. I bought it as a bare hull and I built it up. It was a very good riding boat for its size. Yours must fly with the 200. I had a 150 and the boat hit 50 MPH.

Old Sea Crafts have always put me in awe, back in the day they were rated for 500hp and I had a bud with a cc that had twin 235hp Johnsons and a factory tower.I'll try to get pics of that "Space shuttle"and post them.I regularly fished the Wilmington/Spencer canyons back in the early 80s with mine and everyone considered me nuts(kinda Barta-ish).
