  1. Fire sprinklers are the answer. There has never been a significant loss of life in a building with properly functioning fire sprinklers. If the building is sprinklered, the fire does not build up to a large fire, and in the case of a high rise, the entire building would not need to be evacuated. There are two disclaimers to sprinkler systems. Terrorist events like the WTC don't count. You can't build a building to withstand an attack like that. The second is a properly functioning system. There have been instances where there were repairs or modifications being done, and there have also been instances where the system was intentionally vandalized or disabled. Still, fire sprinklers are the single biggest life saver in regards to fire protection.
  2. Don't sell your daughter short either. If she is exposed to fishiing, especially with her dad, she can love it just as much as your son! Enjoy the time with them now. My oldest daughter has discovered boys, so my popularity level is dropping quickly. Good times for sure!
  3. All of us have had our say about the prices at West Marine. I don't want to get into that again. This weekend I arrived at my boat to find my battery charger not working and 5 dead batteries. I could not find the paperwork on the charger, but I knew I bought it sometime in the last few years. One West Marine store manager looked up the purchase for me and found I had purchased the charger in April of '06, and suggested I see what the factory warranty was. He also looked and found a store that had a replacement in stock, since the model was now discontinued. The manufacturer, Xantrex, chose not to help me at all since the product only has a 1 year warranty. I figured I was screwed and a $350 charger was done, on top of the 5 batteries I had to replace due to the charger failure. I went into my local West Marine which happened to be the one who had the last exact replacement in South Florida. I spoke with the manager and explained the situation. She sold me the charger for their cost of $165, even though the retail was $349. I felt like the company appreciated my business and made an effort to make me happy. This was for a product that was 2 years out of factory warranty. Sandra, the manager at the Delray Beach West Marine went out of her way to make sure I was happy. It is esy for us to complain when something goes wrong. I had to make sure she got the praise she deserved for going above and beyond.
  4. I knew of the previous accusations, and I also remembered that the guy was not convicted of anything. Also, the recent history of Chaos has left a bunch of people without rods that they have paid for, and now Chaos is out of business. I have never been to the store, and probably never will. Wiley, I did not know you had a previous bad experience with them. In my particular instance, the person I dealt with went out of her way to make sure I was taken care of. That is my only personal experience with them, and it was a positive one.
  5. I ordered a set of controls from River Marine Supply last week, and specified overnite shipping, and left instructions to call if there were any problems. The next day I get a call saying my item was out of stock and asking if I wanted them to refund the purchase to my card since they were not expecting more for another week. I thanked them and said I would take the refund. I was disappointed, but at least they did exactly what I asked. Within an hour, I got another call saying they were able to fill my order and my product was actually in the person's hand I was speaking with. The controls arrived the next morning. They had two different chances to either not care about my order, or to at a minimum, cost me another day or two. Since I was shipping to my rental house in the Keys while I am on vacation, I was impressed they took the time to make sure exactly what I asked for happened.
  6. I have been seeing more of ths type of thing in my line of work as well. I have caught a couple of fire sprinkler contactors billing customers for inspections and not finding obvious deficiencies. It is very frustrating as the process to penalize them is extremely cumbersome. Wth the economy the way it is, it will get worse before it gets better.
  7. I'll be down the first week of June if no one has done it by then, let me know.
  8. I like to troll a flying fish, rigged to swim, right up close at the back of the prop wash. I've caught many big dolphin this way, along with several wahoo. You can't troll this bait too fast, so it is good for working an area that looks productive.
  9. I'll be getting up a boating related business site soon and will be happy to put a link there.
  10. You all su**! And another thing!!!!!!! My Amsoil is better than your Mobil 1! You're an idiot if you use dino oil!!! And your Bayliner is gonna sink just sitting there............ Just wanted to remind everyone why this will be better.
  11. I barely saw my boat in the last year. I am making progress though. I am in the process of valve jobs for both my engines along with some overdue maintenance. Things are starting to come together. I also obtained my captain's license and have some plans to put that to use. Nothing that is going to have me changing careers, but I think there is a niche market that will help pay the bills a little bit. My big boating event is in June. I have a house in the Keys rented for the month and will be heading down there for some family fun time along with some hard core fishing trips. My daughters are old enough to snorkle now, so that is part of the plan. It will be nice to use the boat for a change!
  12. Congrats. Soon you can have him working to expand your light making capabilities! All BS aside, it is probably the greatest thing I have ever done. I have daughters, but my oldest one can hang with any boy on the boat. It is a true blessing.
