  1. Been fishing my 210 Whaler Ventura offshore for the last eight years (3100 hours of offshore fishing to be exact). My mind set has been I didn't need outriggers. I've had no problem catching fish on flatlines, downriggers, hard baits, and pitch baits etc. This year for my birthday my 1st and only mate gave me 15 foot telescoping Taco Outriggers. After some thought I installed them using gunnel mounts. It really adds a new dynamic to my spread for sure, in as much as I can control my baits and numbers of rods I can fish. Here's my plan .... please chime in with ideas. I thought about fishing two rods per outrigger but decided to try one to see how it goes. On the trip to and from my offshore I plan to run with the outriggers collapsed. Here are some pictures. Running position ...... Plan A ...... teaser rods will be deployed one at a time ..... I've got some starboard wedges being cut when they come in I'll replace the PCV board ones.
  2. Finally installed the Garmin 740 and SH GSX 2100 on my Whaler. I had an extra CP30 SH Command Mic so I installed it. Here are some pictures. My first and only mate Cheryl gave me some 15 foot Taco telescoping outriggers for my 64th birthday so installed them too. I'm having some starboard wedges made for the gunnels using PCF board until they get here. I've been meaning to do this for 8 years. I think they look ok for a 21 foot boat.

  4. Roger that!! I flew over to meet the Indy in 77 and she tore off about 150' of the catwalk on the way over. Glad I missed that ride. Worst that I ever rode out was some solid 50s in the North Atlantic aboard the Ike. We used to go through 10-20 footer with only a few degrees of pitch or roll and look over to see our escorts take 30 degrees or so. I spent 31 years in the Navy .... my first ship back in 1966 was the USS Wedderburn DD 684 (Fletcher Class 5 5" single mounts). We spent most of our time under water rock and rolling.

  6. Here you go .......... Pictures are worth a 1000 words. The GXM 51 connectivity is straight forward. Once you get your NMEA 2000 backbone installed you connect the NMEA 2000 wire from the the GXM 51 antenna to it. In this picture you can see the Garmin 740 is also connected to the backbone so any NMEA 2000 device connected to the backbone will send data to your 740. The green dot indicates where my GXM 51 connects and the yellow dot where my NMEA 2000 power source connects. Here's what the GXM 51 connectors look like. This is what your XM displays look like on the 740. System display .... everything working normally. XM Music control display ..... There you go .......
  7. Thanks BOZ ..... Bill ..... The GXM 51 Smart Antenna provides both XM Weather and Music output. I'll take some pictures of the connectivity later this afternoon. It's a real easy connecttion.
  8. Jay ..... Thanks for the compliment. I used a half inch thick piece of oak that was 24 x 12 inches to start with which is the same type of wood in the used in my previous install. Served me well for 4 + years. I sprayed it with Valspar flat black paint from Lowes (5 coats). I put a little over 2200 hours on my Whaler with the previous install and no issues whatsoever. I fish offshore so it was put to the test on more than one ocassion. Here's what my previous install looked like ... I removed the two pieces inside the electronics box. Once I get my Whaler back ... having some glass work done ... it will just a matter of crawling in the space under my helm and installing the backboard. The electrical connections will be easy all I have to do is connect them to my fuse block. I'm fortunate in that I have alot of space under my Helm area ... I can actually sit in there comfortably.
  9. I removed my Garmin 2206 and ICOM 504 both working great and on their way to a new owner. They've served me well for the last 4.5 years. Adding a Standard Horizon GX2100 VHF/AIS combo and a Garmin 740 with a GXM 51 smart antenna. As usual I bought everything from BOE .... you just can't beat their service and prices. Thanks Jim. I'm fortunate in as much as I can install all the equipment off the boat and then take it to it when I'm finished. I connected everything up including the GXM 51 to test it out. While I had it on I called XM and cancelled my subscription for my GXM 31 connected to my Garmin 545 and added the GXM 51. The whole process including the call to XM and getting weather data on my 740 took 30 minutes start to finish. Here's some pictures of the new install. Initial install ....... The Garmin 740 and SH GX2100 are good products and have easy to use and understand display functionalities. The NMEA 0183 was easy to connect and provides a host of interactive AIS data via the GX2100. Here are some videos of the 740's capablities. There you go. Both units were easy to install and had good solid install instructions.
  10. Two seperate animals .... the GXM 51 antenna only services XM Weather and Music ... it does not receive positional information of the GPS satellites. Your 4210 came with a GPS 17 series antenna and that's the one you use for positional info. You'll have two antennas. The beauty of the GMX 51 antenna is everything is contained in the antenna so there is no black box below decks.

AIS vessels are only filtered from the map by distance from the boat. The user can set up the range of interest or choose to show all AIS vessels up to a maximum of 100 vessels. Added standard 'select and activate' interface for AIS. User can choose which targets to track with a larger symbol and heading/COG indications. All other AIS vessels display in a smaller symbol to minimize clutter. Use a solid line for AIS vessel heading and a dashed line for course over ground. Added user-controlled trails for AIS and DSC vessels. Added connecting legs over shallow areas at the beginning and end of the path. This allows the boater to auto guide to a shore-based service. The unit will sound an alarm when the boat approaches the shallow leg. Added a control for shore-line proximity tolerance which allows the user to choose tighter margins for passage through narrow channels or set a larger distance margin from the shoreline. When following Auto guidance added a navigation option to recalculate Auto guidance to the current destination from the boat's current position.

Because the black box can be mounted anywhere out-of-sight, the VHF 300 saves important real estate on the helm. Boaters operate the unit via the GHS™ 10 microphone. This handheld mic features a crisp 2-inch LCD display, dedicated rotary key for frequent tasks, and three soft buttons for dynamic controls. The VHF 300 supports up to three GHS 10 mics which have built-in speaker for vessels with multiple stations, and uses either the supplied four-inch active speaker with volume knob, or an optional third-party passive speaker. With multiple stations, the system can be used as an on-boat intercom. The VHF 300 AIS receives both Class A and Class B signals simultaneously, ensuring that no critical information is lost.
  20. The advantage of the GSM 51 antenna is that it is a smart antenna .... i.e. everything is containied in the antenna to receive weather and music. It will save you space inside your console. The GDL30A has to be installed inside your console whereas the GXM 51 is installed on your T-Top roof. Tom

  22. Most of the issues have been with the sonar functionalities. Garmin is in the process of working on their sonar software codes.
