Well I got hold of Garmin and they sent me a software update disk. version 3.30 on GPS update is 3.40. Installed and update worked I can not imagine needing an update would shutdown a unit.

I have a small 16 foot flats boat that I run in the Indian and Banana saltwater rivers in Florida. I bought a Garmin 498C about a 1 1/2 years ago and had it installed by the dealer I bought the unit from. The first unit lasted about 14 months. One day when starting the unit it went through the logo screen into the "I agree" screen for maybe 2 seconds and then to "Updating software" . On each restart it did the same. Talk to Garmin and was told to send it back. Since it was out of warranty also send $160.00 dollars. I got the new unit and installed it. This time I added under the console mount a 1/2 inch rubber shock mount hoping to protect the unit. This one lasted about 30 days or 3 trips. I got the exact same problem. Sent it back, didn't cost anything for the replacement since the unit had a 90 day warranty. I just installed the 2nd replacement and got 2 trips out of it before it was giving me the same message.I was wonder if anyone has experienced this problem with their units. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Gary
