  1. Good stuff, I will post pics once I get it all finished up. Thanks all!
  2. It is a 2003 trailer so you have a point. With any luck and a little extra cash, I'll be getting something a tad bigger within the next year or so.
  3. In addition to adding a starboard dash panel so I can relocate some gauges, I was wondering if there are any gauges that I should have but don't. My boat is a bare bones 17' CC flats boat and currently has a gas gauge, tilt/trim gauge and a compass. Are there any other gauges that would be beneficial or that I should have?

  5. I want to redo the dash on my console. The previous owner's setup leaves something to be desired. Since there are already holes cut in the console, I thought I would just make a replacement panel out of Starboard and then I could position the gauges the way I want them. I really think the contrast of black Starboard would look good against the white console but I have no experience with it. Has anyone used black Satrboard for such an application and how has it held up, has it faded? I am told Starboard works a lot like wood, what is the best method of cutting and will a router work to round over edges? Thanks

  7. Yes, I know, this subject has probably already been done...to death but humor me. I know I need some kind of fuel water separator on my 17' CC w/70 hp 2-stroke Yamaha but don't know which to use. I have seen Sierra, Racor and Yamaha Mini 10 Micron. I like the Racor as you can drain water out of the bowl but, it is 2.5 times the cost of the others. I know the other you just replace the filter every 50 or so hours so is one really any better than the other? In that it is a small boat, I have limited space in my transom.
  8. Took the family up to the lake Sunday, boat ran fine all day until time to head back to the ramp. Boat started up fine, went into gear but, upon attempting to accelerate, it started running really rough. I throttled back and it ran fine, only making about 5 - 6 mph. I then noticed that my tilt/trim would not work and my gauges were not working either. We limped back to the ramp and I was able to get the boat trailered. Took a look at everything yesterday and upon examination, found the connections and the fuse at the the fusible link (between the battery and the motor) were somewhat corroded. I cleaned them off, put everything back together and started her up. All gauges were working and the motor ran great, even as I increased power. This is a 2003 70 hp Yamaha 2-stroke. I am not all that knowledgeable about boat motors, can someone tell me why a bad electrical connection caused the motor to run rough? I am trying to learn all I can, thanks!

  10. Here it is. It isn't much but it gets me on the water. Maybe once all of the stimulus money kicks in I can afford a big boy boat. Sorry, hope that wasn't too political. Anyway, here is my boat and the Admiral at Hog Inlet in Cherry Grove, SC.
  11. I am currently wearing H2Optics (made by Bolle) and while I have only had them a couple of months am liking them so far. For what I paid for them, I don't care if they last 2 - 3 years, I just can't justify $100+ for sunglasses.
  12. I would love to post a couple of pics but I am obviously too dumb to figure out how to post. Any help?
  13. Tidewater is very nice, on the ocean and lots of water. A bit pricey but you may as well spend it before the govt. takes it. True Blue........hated it, wierd layout and some kind of psycho ###### placed all of the over-sized traps.
  14. I haven't found a lot about the skiffs and flats boats at they no longer make them. Everything that is a Polar now has deeper V hulls for more open water. My boat is rated for a max 115 hp so it could definitely take some more power but, that being said, it moves fairly well w/a 70. If my speedo is accurate, it has hit 35 (not fully loaded) and it gets up on plane fairly quickly. Especially when you consider it has a wide beam (88") and a big almost flat bottom. I also like all of the room that it has to offer, especially when you consider it is only a 17'. As soon as I figure out how to post photos, I'll post a couple of mine. Take it easy
  15. I am in the process of rebuilding my aluminum I-beam trailer, new hubs, springs, shackles, axle bolts, plates, bunks and bunk supports. It should be like new when I finish. When I removed the galvanized (now rusty) bunk supports, there was what appeared to be crusted on salt deposits between the supports and the square aluminum tubing. Upon cleaning this off with a wire brush, it appears that the aluminum has corroded (it s pitted). Is this normal, is it a reaction between the alum/galv? It is not close to going through the tube but, what should I do to these spots, and is this something I can inhibit when putting new supports on? Last question, this is a flats boat so the boat sits entirely on the bunks, not on keel rollers. Would it make a big difference if I moved the bunks out/in a few inches to avoid these "corroded" areas? Thanks for any/all input.

  17. The more I look at other's boats, the more bummed out I get.......yes, I guess some would call it boat envy. With 2 kids, there is not a lot of disposable income so for now, this will have to do. Maybe we could start a "small boat club".
  18. Hey, another Polar owner..........there do not appear to be a lot of us out there. I have a 2003 Flats 1788 w/70 hp Yamaha. It definitely is not fancy but it was in excellent shape when I found it, had low hours, the price was right and it meets my needs right now. I like the hatches at the back on either side of the transom, were those factory? Mine does not have those. I have done a few modifications on mine and find it to be a serviceable if not fast and flashy boat. I have 2 kids and really like how much room there is stable it is. Put some more photos on.
