  10. PINELLAS COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- A father and son were injured Tuesday when the personal watercraft they were on malfunctioned. The incident occurred while the watercraft was still on shore on the Gulf side of the beach near Sheraton Sand Key Resort on Clearwater Beach. According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, a man was showing his teenage son how to operate the watercraft. They say he started the engine and disconnected the safety lanyard, which shuts off the engine if the rider is thrown off. The engine shut off as designed, so the man reconnected the lanyard. When he tried to start the engine again, the watercraft exploded. The father and son were thrown into the water, but only had minor injuries. The father suffered a gash on the back of his head. Both individuals also had burns on their legs. They were taken to a local hospital where they are recovering.
