First Post! - Mercruiser 6.2 Inboards

Anyway, I'm eyeing a boat that has twin 6.2's, and the starboard motor appears to be a complete gonner (bent rod, broken valves, etc.) and the port motor reportedly has some sever piston scarring, and may also need replacement. It's obvious to me that there has been some neglect involved here, but what is the deal with these 6.2's? I don't see them used very often. Would I be able to pick up some 6.2 longblocks?, would it be worth it, or would you recommend switching to a 6.0 or 5.7. Big blocks will not fit.

This may be of some help. When we first started using 6.2s at Stamas, we had a number of engine failures due to water injestion through the exhaust (hence the broken internal parts!). Merc's solution was 6" risers in between the manifolds and the elbows, give the exhaust a more downhill run. On some boats, because of deck clearance, that's not possible... :(

Very interesting, thank you. That makes alot of sense, except on this model boat, the exausts are on the sides of the hull, which I "think", would make it a little harder to injest water when backing down, unless the valves are timed as such to just suck up water as its exiting the riser.

I suspect that adding a spacer and taller riser would not work in this case, although I'd have to do some research.

Either way, sounds like replacing with 5.7s or 6.0s would be the answer. Have any idea if one could swap out various parts from the 6.2 to a new 5.7 longblock? I doubt it, but it's worth asking the question. This boat can be had cheap, but it definitely is going to need a repower.

Does anyone remember the 377 Scorpion back in the late 90s? Bored and stroked 350. Do a conversion on 6.2L. Comes out to 378 CI.

Hmmmm...gets me to wondering.

I'm sure I'll be proved wrong here, that the internal dim.'s are totally different, but the coincidental displacement figures make me wonder... :504_shrugging:
