OK, I've run out of gas on my 200 hp outboard and someone stops and gives me 2 gals. Will I get further at idle speed or on plane?

If you look at the performance bulletins from the outboard manufacturers, a slow idle at 1,000rpm and about 6mph will give you the absolute best mileage.

But, a slow plane at around 3,000rpm and upper 20s-mph will give you only slightly less mileage. That would seem to be the way to go, especially if you are going against a current.

No, I,m still "out there". I am just curious in case I ever find myself in a low fuel situation. Thanks for the reply.

Well we never did hear back from ya. anyways how much fuel does your boat hold?

Typically the best fuel economy for any outboard is around 4200 rpms and engines at proper trim will increase economy to it's peak performance.
