Electical Issues with boat or Yamaha F150.

Recommended Posts

Hey, I wanted to see if I could fix this problem with the help from people who know a bit about this stuff.

Boat 07' Key West Bay Reef w/ Yammy F150. No prior electrical issues.

Issue: I had been driving at planning speed when I hit the motors trim button briefly and the motor stumbled and almost died. I tried it again and the motor stumbled again. Throughout the day I learned that my Battery Meter on the dash said that my batteries were around 13.4V's most of the day and the motor ran fine. Strangely the meter would say that my batteries were around the low 12V's and if I pushed the trim at this time, the motor would stumble or even die. The Meter would read both 13.4 and low 12's off and on throughout the day. At one point I stopped the motor to fish and it would not start. The meter showed the battery at 12V and would go down to 9V or so under the load of the starter. Because of the fact that the meter would show the battery go from the mid 13's to the low 12's while running, back and forth made me rule out bad batteries. I have in fact replaced the engines batteries and the problem still exists, so bad batteries can be ruled out. Just now checking the boat while I hit the motors tilt switch, it hardly moves. It goes so slow. Ok so where do I start. Seems like a bad connection somewhere. I have a voltmeter and I want to figure this out.

Other little facts about the set up. These batteries are only used on the motor and all (?) electronics. There's a separate set for the Trolling Motor.

There's a Perko Switch and a fuse (?) see pic.

Thanks for any help

You have a BAD connection somewhere and most likely a ground wire/connection , even with a bad connection you will still show Volts but when Amps are pulled The weak connection does not hold up to the load applied.

Long story short, Check ALL of your connections.

I assume there's one set of wires going to my motor and another to my console for the electronics. Since my motor is obviously affected, should I start by checking the wires leading to and from my motor? I will only have about 45 min of daylight to look during the week so this might take a while to discover but I really need to get it fixed.

Thanks

Jared

The first thing to do is get rid of the battery wing nuts and use stainless steel nuts and lockwashers tightened with a wrench. Then check the battery cable fastening at the motor.

Your motor stumbling when trimming is due to lack of voltage to the ignition and electric fuel pump and injectors. Somewhere in the electrical system is a "restriction" or your batteries are weak. Yamaha does not recommend the use of maintenance free or sealed batteries.

In very rare instances, the stator could be weak or the regulator acting up.

I went over all the connections. At least all that I know of. Checked all the battery terminals, the back of the Perko and at the engine itself. Checking the battery cable fastening at the motor showed 12.5V. Some reason it still won't start with the 12.5V. The starter "clicks" but the motor doesn't turn over.

Seems like a bad starter but would that have anything to do with the fact that when the motor did run, the voltage would drop and when it was "dropped" any touch of the Tilt/Trim would kill the motor.

HMM???
