Boat - Towing Retrofit

Recommended Posts

I know...this isn't fishing but w/3 first mates under 12, I am concerned there may be a mutiny this summer if I don't get it done.

I have a Scout 280 Abaco, and it's not outfitted for towing (tubes, skiers...).

I don't know if it's intentional by the manufacturer, or simply that the boat is intended for fishing/cruising.

My questions:

1. Could it be possible that boats hull material is not capable of the towing load (plenty of power, dual 225's)?

2. If it is capable, any advice as to how to retrofit the boat to attach the tow rope? (note there's very little...less than 2" between the motors, so a central cleat probably wouldn't work)

Thanks

JB

1) The hull material is fine, assuming an appropriately mounted tow point (backing plate, correct bolts).

2) Suggestions....call the local leaning post/t-top/tuna tower manufacturer and ask them about making you a ski pylon. Should be able to get one for a few hundred bucks and will be the ideal way to two them, and be removable. Otherwise, put a towing eye up towards the top of your transom on each side of the boat and use the harness described above.
