cell phone range extender

I need to put a cell phone range extender on my boat for various reasons. Right now I only get reception out to 8 miles.

any one using a range extender? make and model - ease of installation?

At 800 mHz, you aren't going to do much better than line-of-sight. Try an external antenna up higher for the cheapest attempt at improvement. You should probably do 10 - 15 statute miles with an antenna 8' above the waterline and a cell tower up 150' or so.

I actually have one that I just took off the boat I just bought. I have no idea how well it worked, it was in my way when I upgraded electronics. The last owner said it got him about 10 miles.

It is made by digital antenna, and has a 4' cell antenna made by digital. I'll probably sell it one of these days. I just have to figure out a fair price.

I had one with an 8ft antenna and it was a total waste of time. If you really need good coverage spend an extra $500 and get a good Sat Phone.
