i have seen 2 that burn the power-head gasket that caused water in he oil
they updated the gaskets now

you can pull tranny and v drive then
most people try to remove the motor on i/o without removing the drive, which is impossible because of the yoke

Not to sound like it may be obvious, but it sure sound like an HG. What were the signs of "failure" that led you to this issue? Overheat on the Temp gauge? Perhaps a blocked intake?
