  1. The wife and I are considering adoption of a baby. We have been looking into a service they charge 1100.00 just for the initial consultation. I am curious to know what the costs are associated with adopting a child. We are both 43 and ain't gettin any younger and have the means to support child as we have none of our own.

    Just curious to know if anyone has gone through this and what we can expect.

    I also worry about a biological parent deciding they want the kid back? I would also be curious if any of you have adopted up to the age of four. I would prefer an infant but the wife want to explore the older route. I am just not sure how that would work out.

    I really need someone to mow the grass and clean the boat and fish with and take care of me when I am old and sucking food through straw J/K :239_fishing:

  2. blackfinmike (or anyone), what are your thoughts on what is an 'offshore boat'? Minimum requirements/length? Thanks.

    A 25 ft Grady should handle the Abaco sound and bahama bank with no isssues at all. I ran my old 25 Bluewater with a single 250 yami from West palm to marsh harbor without a second thought. The biggest hurdle is the gulfstream and that only 50 miles. Where this boat went down sounds like it was in the sound which well protected for the most part. The only thing that could have happened was they were coming through a pass from offshore possibly in an "abaco rage" which no boat should try. it sounded to me like they were on the way home to the states in which case they would not be outside the Abaco sound or bahama bank. Something else had to occur for the boat to sink other than rough weather. Highly doubtful in my opinion.

    ENDO love to see the new ride,Yes he still has it! and scares the hell out of me riding with those guys there about blind and deaf plus I am not used to cruising 40+ For my boat is a 20 knot cruise LOL. They are shipping the boat back this winter to WW to have them do some work on the console and rewire the boat she's showing some age but they repower every couple of years I can tell you that boat has killed more than its share of grouper. :1992_beer_cheer:

    Funny story they were being chased down by the FWC in a mako cc one time for 16 miles. FWC didnt catch up till them till they were washing the boat down in the marina. FWC was pissed but my Dad never even saw them they running 50 something on flat calm day so FWC never got close..LOL

  4. While it is hard to determine what aggressive is on the computer, I trust your dad knows from being prior LE when they are crossing the line. I know he wont like doing it, but tell him to call the local FWC office and ask to speak to the Major or Captain in charge. Tell him to voice his complaint and how rediculious its getting. Most of the time they will listen and speak with officers if neccessary.... I know I have had a run in or two with incompetent/rude officers also and I will pick up a phone and let someone know. I dont do written complaints unless its something criminal in nature.

    thats exactly what he did. I should've mentioned that. The aggressive part was more attitude, searching procedures etc. I mean come on my Dad is 71 and the guy fishing with him is 72 a retired Barnett Bank President they hardly looked like hard core outlaws...although the boat a 28 white water with twin 250 hpdi and dark blue hull might be a little suspicious for thse 2 old farts to be running around on.

  5. You are required by law to cooperate with safety inspection, if you dont the officer may board your boat to check for it without a warrant. Fisheries inspection the officer just needs Probably Cause you have been fishing. If you refuse, that might take a warrant (been 15 years since I was in Marine Enforcement) but for sure you can be detained while a warrant is gotten and you will surely be holding a ticket for the slightest violation whether its boating or fisheries related. For the most part, inspection and searches of boats are much easier and require much less legal requirements than to search a vehicle or a residence. My best advice is to cooperate, if for some reason the officers do something you dont like, report them to their supervisors.

    Cracker, I would always cooperate with LEO's I am pretty cautious and would never jeapordize my DOD clearances as that is my livelyhood. However I my Dad has been getting extensive grief from some FWC guys in the panhandle and he is a retired FDLE! They have been really aggresive with the recreational fisherman up in the remote area of the Panhandle Alligator Point and Carrabelle.

  6. You are asking a question that has answers based on whether your in Federal or State Waters. 5 miles offshore your in Federal waters (out to 3 miles in the Atlantic is State Waters). The coasties can wear many hats (As USCG, Homeland Security or National Marine Fisheries Officers). No probably cause is needed to do a safety inspection and if their has been a Nexus with the border (which coming back from the Bahamas, there has) they can detain the boat and look wherever. The USCG is very ###### about firearms on boats and are trained to ask many questions about them. They do not need your permission to do a safety inspection that is just courtesy if they ask. The Feds have much more power and authority than the State guys. They can drill your hull for drugs on mear suspicion because your story does not make sense with other evidence on your boat (say the boat looks like its been at sea a long time with several empty gas cans but you say you have only been out a day).

    The state on the other hand is more restrictive. No probably cause is needed to stop a boat and do a safety inspection (same as feds) . To check for Fisheries violations there has to be probably cause you have been fishing (fishing rod on board, spearfish equipment, nets, etc.). Firearms on boats is generally considered Ok by state laws. Many State FWC Officers are deputized as Federal Officers also so they where many hats also.

    This is a very basic explaination of what is needed to stop a boat. While it can be a bit of a hassle and it seems you felt the officer was too SWATish looking, you must remember back up on the water is almost non existant or can take a while, particularily for the FWC officers who mainly work alone. Also it is probably a violation of the USCG Policy for a single boarding officer to be on a boat by himself if he is aware of a weapon on board. Hopefully I answered some of your questions....

  7. So I was tooling back from the Bahamas the other day and 5 miles out of St Lucie inlet I spot a vessel coming from the west directly towards us. The time of day was right at dark thirty and its the USCG in a small boat. They cirlce around me and come along side and ask if they can d a safety check. I say sure. So they bring their over size rubber boat next to mine in a decent wind chop at the angle their coming from it could've presented a problem for my rub rails etc so I push the boat off the guy starts yelling at me saying don't push back I inform him if they intend to board let me turn the boat dn sea then bring the rubber boat along side.

    they do as I suggest and put a guy on board who resembled a swat team member with all his toys he looked as if he was ready to shoot any second. the kid asked if I had any weapons and I said yes a SW 9mm and 45 rounds. Well that set him off he calls in on the radio he needs back up so they put another guy on board.

    they searched my entire boat including the engine room for my "halon inspection" which I did not know was a requirement. Well this crap goes on an hour or so of searching and questions etc. They really wanted to know about my weapon and why i was carrying. I told them that we were fishing in remote areas and I always carry.

    Fast forward 2 weeks later my buddy was on the boat with me got pulled over again by the feds. He was on a 20 ft angler with a single outboard. they went as far as removing the batteries to look down in the aft bildge section.

    my question is what would happen if we declined to be searched? What if i told them to get a warrant? What would happen what gives them probable cause to stop me and conduct all these checks? Another example is I was at the sand bar mem. day they had helos and cops everywhere and all for 5 BUI's how much tax payer money did that cost us? I am very pro LEO and work in extensively in force protection and ATFP work but it seems a bit extensive to me all this show of force we are in Stuart martin county for cryin out oud not Fallujah! :504_shrugging:

    She's been to the bahamas 4 times since we had her in the yard I hauled the boat thinking i was going to replace the cutless bearings which turned out didn't need any work so we buffed and waxed and resplashed. People can say what they want about Volvo diesels I for one have been VERY pleased with the reliability of my engines. All I do is change the belts once a year, impellars once a year and oil and filter service every 100 hours religously.1 :239_fishing:

  9. Waddill: Did you end up making the trip over? How was it? I had a friend who went over on Friday and came back today. Did you take any pictures?

    Yes we went over Friday weather was superb stayed at Old Bahama Bay on the boat. Fishing was not stellar with full moon and screwy current. We ate well drank well and generally had a good time. We caught some dolphin yeallow snapper and some grouper but was unusally slow. We came back on Sunday I should start taking some pics it always seems last on my mind. One cool thing was we came up on about 300 lb blue marlin sunning him self of course he did not take our baits. We also saw 3 seperate marlin free jumping during our crossing

    Also got some bad diesel at OBB caused us some grief coming home had to drain the filters and slowed the boat down.

  10. I have issue with Bennetts so called "excellent service" I hear so much about! I for one have never gotten any good service from those folks at Bennett. mainly because my Bennetts have 1600 hours and 12 years on them and never been touched and they work just fine. ..LOL better than my damn Rolex

  11. Got back from Florida last night to a nice steak supper prepared by the Admiral

    The surveyor Henry Pickersgill (a great surveyor . . . he supports the prospective buyer all of the way!) and I spent Sunday crawling into every nook and cranny of the vessel we could get into

    We developed two lists of things to examine . . . those that could be easily corrected and a second list of more difficult problems

    The easy to correct list included replacing all bilge pumps, the sump, airconditioning and refrigeration, and many more for about $30,000 in parts and probably $10,000 in labour.

    The big problem was that we saw some separation of the planks from the frame, but could not confirm if this was for the entire vessel or only in the area near the air conditioning compressors etc. Pounding on the hull the enxt day would have confirmed the extent of the problem, thus the need to remove the vessel from the water.

    The pics I took on Sunday were limited to all of the problems we identified, labelled and documented . . . the surveyor had all of the details in his book of survey record

    The plan was to do the photo shoot on Monday when we did the sea trial and engine survey . . . this did not happen . . . sorry no pics . . . here is the explanation

    On Monday morning we met with boat owner and the broker at the marina and the plan was to remove the vessel from the water . . . as the boat was started to be lifted (maybe raised 2 feet at that point) it suffered some small minor damage to the hull and we could see some discouraging problems with the planking above the water line (could not see below the water line) . . . the owner of the marina immediately placed the vessel back in the water and told us that he would not be responsible for any damage should the owner of the boat decide to procede and lift the boat out of the water

    At this point a large crowd had gathered to see the vessel because it was beautiful

    The owner at that point wanted to procede to his marina about 30 miles (?) away that had a lift that had four (?) lifting belts instead of the two where we were at . . . this was to distribute the load more evenly . . . another red flag

    At this point the surveyor and I moved away from the group to talk about the previous day's problems and what we had just seen. The hard to do list is that I believe (the surveyor agrees but the the owner disagrees) that the vessel needs a plank off of frame restoration . . . the cost could be at double what I would pay for the boat and it could take a year to get the work done

    We then met with broker and owner of the boat and told them that I had decided to withdraw my offer . . . I could have gone for a sea trial and told the owner afterwards that I did not want the boat, but I did not . . . I thought that it would have been unethical to do that and make him pay for fuel etc.

    So, the search continues

    Wow sorry to hear that but better safe than sorry. Wood boats make me nervous from the simple fact I don't know much about them and what is required to maintain them.
