  1. Limbofish,

I realize that FL is probably a much better year round market for this but unfortunatly I am stuck in NJ. For now I am juat looking to get started and see where it leads me. I know that I am limited in what I can do without an indoor shop but if the work comes my way I can always rent out space locally to do the work. I am also thinking about doing other electrical work for the industrial controls and automation marketplace so renting out a shop may become mandatory shortly.

    Mechdave,

Can I ask you what rated you charged to do a re-wire job? Was it by the job or was it T&E?

    Andy

What kind of experience do you have? NMEA knowledge, color codes, etc. What kind of warranty? There are many different things that lead to how much you charge. I just had to refit an entire package that someone had put their electronics in and pumps. They used wire nuts and electrical tape. Total mess. You get what you pay for sometimes.

  2. Osprey, Thats what mine ended up being. I have the same head unit with a 4kw. I didsconnected and reconnected everything and it worked like a champ.

Yep, I kinda jumped the gun. Check the radar cable on the back of the head unit for corosion. Add some dielectric grease while there. If the problem still persists do the same on the dome. Inside the dome there is a black plug that is easily accessable and a black and a red wire. Make sure they are clean and plug back in with the grease as well. If its intermittant it could be just bad contact in the wires.

  3. Often times my RL70 Radar shows "Warning Antenna not Rotating". Does anybody have a fix for this? Is there a belt inside the covered dome that may be loose and slipping. If so, is it something a shade-tree mechanic like me can fix?

Most of the time the unit works fine. But the message above has me concerned.

First open the dome cover up and see if moisture is present. There is a belt that could be broken but hardly ever breaks. The RL70 is the head unit. What size dome do you have, 2 or 4kw?

  4. Suggested by dealer :

1 12 inch furuno screen navnet3d, fishfinder and radar, and chartplotter

1 12 inch screen with garmin chartplotter for backup

    1k transducer

    4k furuno dome

    Standard VHF

    Clarion stereo.

What do you think? I have no idea on pricing yet, getting those numbers today <gulp> ...

I would go Furuno with both head units for sure. This way if one head unit crashes you can have a full system on one screen. The other way if you have Furuno/Garmin if the Furuno dies all you have is a Garmin gps.

I would also get a second vhf and seperate antenna to be safe.

Not only will you have a full Furuno networked system but it will look cleaner than having mismatched screens at the helm. Do not forget epirb! If you need some pricing on anything I will be happy to help.
