  3. As I move up to even bigger boats, I am constantly made aware of gear and devices that I am in need of. I only carry 1 extinguisher and now see a need for another, or two. Sorry for your lousy situation and hope both you and your boat heal quickly... Thanks for the post
  4. How many hours? Any poossibility the impeller got fried or is worn? These motors will idle all day long with a bad impeller, but once the rpm's and load build up, they heat up. That's the best place to start.

  7. That picture shows these boats to be a real fishing machine...looks like everyone is having a good time! My transom and top is solid, and no signs of repair....
  8. Backtrack that main power lead leaving the motor. Especdially around the tilt/trim mechanism and coming thru the harness. Sounds like it's grounded....good luck!
  9. We have had this boat a week, and while we tested it I noticed the waterpump was a little weak, not a strong tell tale. Also wanted to spend some time getting used to these motors, so thought an oil change, filters, lower unit oil, waterpump kit and a general clean up and remove some corrosion and rusting of some bolts. Sorry for the quality of the pics, camera was in need of new battery and I really wanted to get done, but chronicle some of this as I went. After searching many posts, I decided to change the motor over to Castrol Syntec, synthetic. They are long out of warranty, so I don't expect Yamaha to care what I run in it. I am also a car guy,old British roadsters, and have been using Castrol since the 60's. I also like a clean motor. That's the reason for the brush, WD40, and pics of the flywheel. I also like having a liberal dose of Yamaha marine grease on parts of the motor at the waterline and on some inside parts. Specifically the tilt motor and the mounting bracket. After applying, I wipe off the excess, but like a liberal film. I dont use silicone, i use WD40 inside my motors. My first new motor, an '86 Yamaha 90 served me well for 10 yrs. with no electrical or mechanical problems whatsoever. I am a firm believer of a dose of WD and also of running the carbs empty as well after flushing the motors. Nowadays I use Salt Away as a final flush.   10. Pro lines and aquasports are good boats. Also Sea Hunt, Key West, Century, Wellcraft, Hydra Sports all made good reliable boats. The motor, however is going to be the most important part of your rig. Make sure you have some qualified help before bringing that rig home. Keep us posted, and remember, it will be difficult for any of us here to "recommend" anything without seeing it or watching it run. Good luck!

  12. Thanks, cracker. I found posts by both Andy and Hotspot that were really handy. Easy to follow as well. I have done a few over the years, but that compression fitting above the housing is kinda new to me. They both covered it really well...
  13. Thanks for all the kind posts..seems as if the port motor is in need of a waterpump, so time to get with Andy and order up a pair of them. Just did lower unit oil, new Yamaha 10 micron fuel/water seperators, new Yamaha oil filters, Castrol Syntec sythetic oil, new plugs....so guess the impellers were bound to be next!! Doesn't seem like these motors like to run on muffs, either. I need to get the two eared kind with water flowing to each side. I may have scorched the impellers myself by using my old muffs....

  15. Well, we started about a year and a half ago buying our first boat in several years. I had made a few geographical moves and with a busy job and approaching retirement we figured we would wait untill the time was right and get back on the water again. The first boat was a Renken CC, about 18.5' with a Yamaha 85. It was a craigslist special that served us well, and with some labor and a few parts replaced it was sold to buy the next boat. That was a KeyWest 2020 DC that was also off craigslist. Agood buy I couldn't pass up. We kept it for almost a year and just sold it, realizing that the fishing we were doing justified a larger boat. Also one we could overnight in. While owning the KW, I looked for a flats boat and bought this BlueFin aluminum runabout, also off craigs. We sold the KeyWest and traded the BlueFin in on our latest and hopefully last boat for a while.   16. Actually, on my last motor, Yamaha 150 2 stroke that aux charging plug was coming off a 30A fused connector. Plugging in to it provided me with an entirely seperate charging circuit for the second battery. I understand they can be found on most all larger Yamahas.
  17. I'll chime in here too. Just sold my KeyWest DC with 150 Yamaha and needed a trim sending unit. Also promised buyer new plugs. They arrived promptly and at a reasonable price. I mentioned to Andy that I was in the process of moving up. He suggested if the newer boat had Yamahas he would do a serial number search in the Yamaha system to report any warranty or other issues with the motors. I got the numbers of the twin 115's 4 strokes and Andy happily obliged. They came back clean and helped in my decision to buy. We just pulled up less than an hour ago with our new rig...'02 KeyWest 2300 WA Bluewater series. I will have to send Andy and the forum some pics tomorrow!
  18. I use the wire cage, also weighted. Make my own chum by grinding up bait, grunts, junk fish, then freezing in a tupperware form that fits the chum cage. I use a clip eye and fasten the chum basket to my anchor rope...attached to a length of line ...and ease it down near the bottom. Gets it out of the way and I have yet to have a grouper wrap around it. Sure helps to get the bite started on the reefs.

  21. Well, we received a phone call on Friday and it looks as if an offer we put on a boat has been accepted! I have been trying to move up to a little bigger rig with twins, mainly due to the distance we have to run to get to any decent water. Not many boats equipped that way were falling within our budget. I had another boat that I sold and yet another boat to sell to make all this happen. We offered a boat as a trade and some cash but had not heard form the seller.....untill Friday. We will sea trial on Wednesday, and if the stars align and if it's meant to be, we will be bringing our rig home. Can't wait!!
