  1. I have a Merc and what I say might not apply to a Yammi, but....I would seriously hesitate before tilting the engine while flushing.Water in the cylinder once and you will cry big $$$$.

    If you are looking for a confirmation on how long it takes, from dry motor to when it starts peeing, then you can do the following : put some kind of tank, full of water, to cover the water pump aspiration inlet of the motor and run it like that.Pay attention to how long it takes for water to come out of the pee hole. ( you can effectively do this also in the sea, with someone starting the motor and you watching the pee-hole).

    Then, when you flush with the muffs, always make sure you have plenty of excess water flowing out of the muffs, and a high pressure.You might want to manually tighten the muffs a bit .Make sure they are double muffs, one ' ear' spitting water , the other plugging the water intake grid on the motor.

    Question: can you flush your Yammi directly from a flush port , without using the muffs?That way you can double check if the pee hole is not obstructed by sand, silt etc.

    CAREFUL , if and when you flush directly from the port, not to use excessive water pressure, as doing so might force water through passages in the cylinder head where you do not want it to go.

    CAREFUL, if the pee hole is indeed plugged up stop the motor and proceed to clean the water path to the pee hole: usually , just disconnecting the little tube to the pee hole, sand will come out.

    So , recapping:

    With MUFFS, full pressure, make sure the muffs are tight around the water ports

    With FLUSHING PORT, just the pressure specified ( 4 to 5 psi should do)

  2. I have been wondering how many of you have equipped the boat with AIS.

    If so, did you choose a class B box or just a receiver only box?

    I am considering this extention to my boat, in view of a major overhaul of electronics.

    So, I am looking for feedback on how well it works , to hear about your experiences on the interfacing with the plotter and/ or the radar if you have it as well as the installation tips you might have.

  3. Check out the pics here. The boat camping concept seems to be very popular in the mediterranean.I did it a few times when I lived in Brazil, having adapted my center console for the purpose.

    Quite frankly I was the only one - the majority of the locals could not understand how someone who could afford 100 gal. of fuel would not pay for a hotel.(they do not know what they are missing!).So, this past sumer in Greece I was happy to see a big boating community camping on their boats, be it in port or at some enchanted spot like the one posted here. Any onf you like this boat camping idea or has done this before?

  4. Or (more commonly, and depending on the periodicity of the light) a barge being pushed.

    If I remember correctly from my Captain's exam, Yellow flashing is for hovercraft ( in non-displacement mode), double yellow flashing alternatively ( Port or Stbd) for purse seine gear fishing.The tow ( submerged or semi-submerged) is a fixed yellow light ( makes sense to associate the speed of flashes with the sense of the vessel's speed)

  5. My view from the one European Boat show I attended ( Genoa, Italy, at the beginning of October)is that the generally superior quality of the mid to high end boats made in the USA, coupled with a weak dollar, can really make inroads into the EU market.

    With worldwide transportation costs also down at very low levels, I see why the FLIBS was full of foreigners looking to buy a boat in the USA.

    Attendance was generally down at Genoa ( about 15% lower than last year) and so was the number of deals.Remember ,though , that the FLIBS data for 2008 were taken in the depths of the financial crisis and thus 2009 is a small rebound from extremely depressed levels.

    I have not checked comparable numbers for the other big shows ( Southampton etc,) but will do so with a friend I have in the specialized press.
