  1. Maybe Wiley can shed some stats on this, but it seemed to me over the last few years that the winter was when the forums got more lively,,,,everyone getting cabin fever. I think Wiley did too good of job on THT, and its very user friendly to those of us that frequent there and here. Initially, the new Mods over there were about to run everyone off, but now they seem to have thier mess together, even to the point that some that left and formed thier own forum are back, and some are on here also. Personally, I do prefer the way THT is set up in terms of the different forums, but thats what I was used to. I also liked the McKee forum, as thats what I have, but the real McKees are now classics. OK,, I'll do better and post more here. BTW Wiley, the boat that you seriously considered, you would have loved it..

You may like it there, but wait to see what happens to the layout here in the future!!

  2. I have been trying to participate as much as I can. I agree we need more participation.

I posted my Evinrude thread, but have not had a chance to check the motor yet b/c it snowed here over the weekend.

I visit 5-10 times a day, but we need more topics/discussions going on.

Don't go back to the hating/bashing way... Hang in there it will get better!

  3. Thanks for all the help!

I am mainly trying to fix the motor to learn, and to get some money out of it.

I probably will be replacing it with an E-tec 90, or a verado.

I like the Evinrude because it's white and will match the boat, but that black verado is NICE!

We will see, I am still early in the motor purchasing phase. I still have alot of gelcoat work to do.

Keep the comments coming! I will update when I have more info.

I am getting a repair manual, and a compression tester this weekend. If I have enough time (and no snow) I will post updates.

  4. No offense, but if you aren't sure how to perform a compression test, dismantling that motor yourself may not be the best move and it may be better to try to sell for parts or consult a OMC/Bomba tech. Still good to perform the compression test, though , with throttle wide open on an OFF warm engine, all plugs removed.

On the other hand , if you feel it's not sellable as a running motor now , you may have little to lose and could get a good learning experience out of O/B surgery.

None taken, I am very mechanically inclined. I am mainly into electronics, but have done some small automotive work. At work (TV Repair) I can take light engines, and even VCR mechanisms completely apart and put them back together again. I know this is nothing like an o/b motor, but I am up for the challenge. I always love learning new things, and if I do not know how to do something or the answer to a question I will always find out.

It may end up that I do not fix this motor, but I would sure love to give it a try.

Thanks to all for the suggestions so far, if anyone else has any more please feel free to share!

  5. On those old Evinrude/Johnsons the knock could be a bad wrist pin or just the way it sounds. Your first test should be a compression test. Its done just like on any engine.

Remove the spark plug and screw in the compression tester. Remove the other plug wires so the engine doesn't try to start. Turn the engine over a few times and look at the gauge on the compression tester. Allow it to sit for a few seconds to determine how long it takes to leak down. It should hold the pressure for a few seconds at least.

Do this on all cylinders, they should all be within 10-15% of each other. Also check the plugs when you pull them. Make sure none are damaged. If you have a damaged plug with a crushed electrode the piston is slapping the plug. That means the engine must be torn down.

Just any standard compression checker? I saw one at sears for around $30 bucks. Sorry to be so ignorant but I have never messed with a boat motor.

    Thanks

  6. I am in need of a repair manual for an Evinrude E140TRLCNB motor. This motor is on my 1972 Boston Whaler, and I am trying to repair it, and sell it. The person I purchased the boat from said that it would run, but had a knock to it like a piston was messed up.

Does anyone know where I can get a repair manual from?

Where is a good place to purchase parts from?

Does anyone know what tools are required to do a compression test? Or how to do a compression test on this model?

What are "ideal" compression readings for this motor?

    Thanks in advance!

  7. I visit 10-15 times a day.... Mainly while multitasking at work!

I try to post what I can, when I can; and mainly learn! I love boating, and am trying to repair mine using the information found here.

Also I love this place versus the other b/c there is not bitch$ng and complaining here.'

I think Wiley is headed in the right direction, and once he gets the manufacturers in here things will be awesome!

  8. I use to be real active in dslreports.com in the Satellite Internet forum. They had FAQ's specifically placed in a designated area that answered most frequent questions... Such as how to winterize my boat for the winter.... Instead of having a user search these options, have one layed out answer per inboard/outboard.

    What do you think?

    David

I think it would be a great idea to take information from a bunch of posts on a similar topic and put together in FAQs that could be researched . . . kind of like a wikopedia-of-boating-and-fishing

I think it's a great idea! Wiley and I have discussed it in the past, and I think that it will eventually lean towards DIY videos, ect.... This was discussed prior to RB.

What do you think Auguste? I think FAQ's & DIY video's would be a great help!!!

  9. I think as a forum we should try to eliminate THaT competition, buy bringing more discussions here without all the bitch$ng and wining that goes on over there. I know THaT other site is more established (by our current owner) but RB can be the same way soon. It's a new site Wiley, and eventually RB will be the top dog! Lets keep this forum civilized, and focused.

Maybe we could emphasize on projects, boating discussion, and maybe FAQ's pinned in certain area.
