  1. I'm assuming that you're not talking about a commercial vessel and that you're talking about the typical fire extinguisher most of us have on our boats that we bought at some boating store. If all of that is true, there is no requirement to have it inspected by anyone other than yourself or the CG if they happen to board you. First thing you want to do though is check the overall condition - tap the gauge to make sure the needle isn't stuck, check for peeling paint, rust, etc. Next, turn it upside down and give it a good shake - If you hear a or feel a thunk, the chemical is compacted and the extinguisher is useless. You SHOULD feel the chemical slide smoothly ( like flour sliding down the inside) but not like it's sliding as a chunk. Either way - at six years old and given how inexpensive they are, get yourself another one or two....or three....You may never need them but if you ever do, more is better. If you're still not certain, contact your local CG Auxiliary and they will check it and the rest of your safety gear out for you for free. You can find them using the Flotilla Finder at http://nws.cgaux.org/flotillafinder/ The US Power Squadron will do the same if you can't find an Aux flotilla near you (well, even if you can - both orgs do the same inspections)
  2. Here's another good place to look: http://www.destination360.com/forum/las-vegas/
  3. If you like cars, the car museum in the Imperial Palace is a must see. You can also spend that million there if you like. Most of those that are on display are for also for sale.

  5. If you don't happen to live near St. Petersburg, you can use a zip code based Flotilla Finder to find CGAuxiliary Flotillas in your area that also offer these courses as well as Vessel Safety Checks. Most of the flotillas have web sites that provide schedules, but in more uhmmm......technology challenged areas (like Bucksnort AL) you may have to drill up to the Division or District level. http://ff.cgaux.org/
  6. I looked at my drivers license. I've really never one to be anonymous. The Boat is Tohora Iti, Tahitian for Little Whale. Sheila named it - she spent a year in Tahiti doing research for her disertation. The prior boat was Fear Naut (hence the handle on THT and elsewhere, "Rich" was already taken) - I decided on that after 9/11 when so many folks were being so fearful.
  7. 3rd vote for the MS resizer. One of the nice things about it is that it creates a resized COPY of the original rather than resizing the original. A caveat though: It appends (small) to the filename (i.e. "DSC100025.jpg" becomes "DSC100025 (small).jpg") which some systems have trouble dealing with - I just rename it to remove the parantheses from (small) which resolve the filename problem some apps have trouble with.
  8. On the other hand, even if you have a trailer, is it worth saving the extra $40 and having to trailer it (time and fuel)? Something to consider.

  12. We're all good - they couldn't burn us out and they couldn't flood us out. Not that I want to tempt fate or anything! I imagine Sheila will be along in a bit - She's putting one of the grandkids down for the night.........and he's not really excited about it.....
  13. Assuming the sub was submerged, there are two STs that are likely going to be "career limited", along with a few other folks....
  14. I think we know the answer to that one Sid.
  15. Sunrise, Miss Budweiser's Last Race day - Thunderboat Regatta, San Diego CA
  16. Sawzall? Okay......maybe not the best solution.
  17. I'd be worried about that too Hotspot. There might be some carpeting folks here that can tell you otherwise, but if it were me I'd take the furniture out to make sure the stretch was a good solid one.
  18. Well put Garrett. I was focused on the bilgey stuff (assuming that's what was being addressed since that's where the worst of it occured), but there has been just as much contentiousness on technical issues, tier's, techniques, etc. where often times there is no 3rd party "proof", only peoples opinions based on their experience/training.
  19. What else would a good husband do?!
  20. I always wanted an Osprey OC. At least until the Revenge came along......maybe even then (shhhhh......don't tell Sheila). The Campion was nice, but not as nice as the Osprey.
  21. You've missed the point - I fundamentally agree with you. But when talking politics and some other rather contentious issues of the day, how credible a source is (or how "factual" it is) often depends on your particular point of view. Also, how a "fact" is interpreted is often as much a product of how it is presented as what the raw data might suggest. Even purely scientific data is subject to interpretation, and we will generally tend to interpret things and determine how factual they are from our own personal point of view. Now if we're talking Nav Rules etc. we're looking at a completely different situation, and one that is certainly appropriate since this is a boating site and they are boating related. Hence my vote for zero politics etc. Thanks for correcting my typo (is vs. are). I'll take pass on fixing yours.
  22. 25' BW Revenge Hardtop - Tohora Iti If you want to see the old one (Fear Naut), get yourself a copy of the 13th Edition of Boating Skills and Seamanship. She's in the lower right of the cover, pg 56, 72, 84, 102, 103, 106, 108, heck....you'd almost think I had something to do with the book.
