  1. I'm sure this has been covered but I just got hold of a Greenlee pipe bender from Home Depot to use for bending railing (making a bimini top) and it works absolutely famously. 3/4 inch size is perfect for 7/8 rail tubing. Cost was about $40. Apologies if this is common knowlege, but I'm pretty excited about it.

    Bending stainless steel?

LOS ANGELES – A 16-year-old Southern California girl attempting a solo sail around the world was feared in trouble Thursday in the frigid, heaving southern Indian Ocean after her emergency beacons began signaling and communication was lost.

Abby Sunderland's family was talking with U.S. and international governments about organizing a search of the remote ocean between southern Africa and Australia, family spokesman Christian Pinkston said.

Conditions can quickly become perilous for any sailor exposed to the elements in that part of the world.

"We've got to get a plane out there quick," said Pinkston, adding that the teen's family in Thousand Oaks was asking for prayers for her safety.

"They are exhausting every resource to try to mobilize an air rescue including discussions with the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Coast Guard and various international rescue organizations," he said. The closest land is France's Reunion Island, east of Madagascar, though the exact distance wasn't clear.

Abby last communicated with her family at 4 a.m. PDT and reported 30-foot swells but was not in distress, Pinkston said.

An hour later the family was notified that her emergency beacons had been activated, and there was no further communication. Pinkston said the beacons were manually activated.

Her brother, Zac, who sailed around the world at age 17, told Los Angeles radio station KNX that Abby was in a heavy storm at the time she called home.

"We're still trying to figure out the rescue situation," he said. "There's two boats headed out to her position, one is an estimated 40 hours, the other is 48. Right now we're trying to figure out if there is any way faster. She's in the middle of nowhere pretty much in the southern Indian Ocean. There's nothing closer."

He said Abby's boat was most likely not completely submerged because another beacon would be triggered at a depth of 15 feet.

Abby set sail from Los Angeles County's Marina del Rey in her 40-foot boat, Wild Eyes, on Jan. 23 in an attempt to become the youngest person to sail around the world alone without stopping. Her brother briefly held the record in 2009.

Abby soon ran into equipment problems and had to stop for repairs. She gave up the goal of setting the record in April, but continued on.

On May 15, Australian 16-year-old Jessica Watson claimed the record after completing a 23,000-mile circumnavigation in 210 days.

Abby left Cape Town, South Africa, on May 21 and on Monday reached the halfway point of her voyage.

On Wednesday, she wrote in her log that it had been a rough few days with huge seas that had her boat "rolling around like crazy."

"I've been in some rough weather for awhile with winds steady at 40-45 knots with higher gusts," she wrote. "With that front passing, the conditions were lighter today. It was a nice day today with some lighter winds which gave me a chance to patch everything up. Wild Eyes was great through everything but after a day with over 50 knots at times, I had quite a bit of work to do."

Information on her website said that as of June 8 she had completed a 2,100-mile leg from South Africa to north of the Kerguelen Islands, taking a route to avoid an ice hazard area. Ahead of her lay more than 2,100 miles of ocean on a 10- to 16-day leg to a point south of Cape Leeuwin on the southwest tip of Australia.

Lets pray for her and her family

  4. Yeah, a lot of people are going to argue whether she should have gone, personally I feel it was their family decision and she is a competent sailor so I don't have a problem with it (yeah I admit I would not let my daughter go at that age). Her brother completed a circum-navigaton last year when he was 17 so Abby Sunderland and her family knew what was to be expected.

The mistake that I see is that she started the voyage at the wrong time which placed her in the Indian Ocean at the worst time of the year. I guess they did it because they were trying to break the record for the youngest sailor to sail around the world, so they didn't wait for spring time in the Southern Hemisphere, possibly a tragic mistake.

She might be okay though as she manually activated her EPIRB, which implies she is conscious. Also, her automatic EPIRB has not activated which suggests her boat is still afloat. I think that probably her boat pitch-poled or rolled and since it is a self-righting design, it is floating but is dismasted.

Her problem is that she is in the middle-of-nowhere with help thousands of miles away. So indeed, some prayers would help.

The time of year she sailed was not the optium time to cross over some of the most dangerous seas in the world. My thought is exatly as you stated. Why not at least consider a little better planning? Nearest ship as of today was 400 miles away. I hope she is at least in the survival suit, and hopefully in the raft also!

  5. Here is my dilema. My outboard is too big for my boat in a couple of ways. When boat is in water 3to 4 inches of free board at stern.2 with 21 pitch prop I pass jetskis, and I am getting older the faster I go the more nerveous I get. Even with down sizing from 21 to 19 pitch I can run with jetskis.

So I am looking at a swap for a 70 to 85 hp outboard with same style controls that I have on my Center console. That means Binnacle mount. For those that don't know Binnacle controls are mounted in the Center console .Not on the side with box and cables exposed.Contacting me is easy.My email is truklodyte@yahoo.com

The boat being show was my restoration project she is very light 4 men can pick up boat and walk off with it without engine on it.

I have used craigslist and all I get there is fraudulent offers with a website attached with a virus.

The inline 6 cyl Tower of power! Many hours with this old engine! Good luckon the sale!

  6. Ok... the RB server was hacked at a level beyond my control on Thursday. Looks like we're finally back online!

The timing of the hack to the forum notification email I sent Thursday was totally coincidental.

FOR THE PARANOID: No virus was spread. No emails attacked. No member settings were changed. All the mess was on my side to clean up.

FOR THE RB CREW: Thanks for your patience and understanding and bein' coo'!

Questions, comments? Post them here and don't get your mis-information from "know it alls" elsewhere. :753_hammer_hitting_head:

Im turning off the PC and hiting the beach all day tomorrow with a gin tonic thermos and my new fold out canopy.

    :rb-rules:

Tought you were doing some major changes! Glad to see it's Back! :D

  7. Bought my first boat today. its a 2003 angler 2200 Grande Bay. Its got a 200 4 stroke yamaha with 43 hours. I got it for a little under 12 G's. how do you think i did? it was a repo boat so it does need a little work but it looks good me. and its my first post on this forum!

Congrat's on the boat! Welcome to the forum, and great first post!

  8. I have been told it is bad juju to run the motor while using Yammyhas flush hose!!! Think about how much pressure you would need to circulate the water through the hose, head, and down into the foot... The impeller could become damaged running dry or without ample water . Again, this is not set in stone and I am not god.A trusted Yamaha mechanic told me not to put extra hours on my motor to flush it...

    Hope this helps.

    PD

A trusted Yamaha mechanic told me not to put extra hours on my motor to flush it...

    I think I would change mechanic's!

  9. Hi all,

I am new to this site. I just opened Johnny's Marine Service in Jensen Beach, FL. I have built fiberglass boats for over 20 years on the Treasure Coast of Florida and I offer up my expertise to anyone who has a question about repairing, maintaining, or redesigning their fiberglass boat. Feel free to reach out to me with any question.

I hope you enjoyed Easter Weekend with some well deserved time off (and on your boat).

I recently donated some time to a local youth sailing group and got some local press. Check it out at the following link. http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2010/apr/02/johnnys-marine-service-donates-time-and-expertise-/ I have also attached some before and after pictures.post-7792-127049210874_thumb.jpgpost-7792-12704920448_thumb.jpgpost-7792-127049207824_thumb.jpgpost-7792-127049213778_thumb.jpgpost-7792-127049216291_thumb.jpg

Also, check out my poll at http://polls.linkedin.com/p/81079/fkdqm Please feel free to leave a comment. Has the economy taken the wind out of your sails? I would like to hear how people have been coping with less disposable income and how they have managed to keep up with their boating passtime. Here's to lookin' for that green flash! :)

    Welcome!

  10. I completely disagree. Although the youth towing the boats without lights was a major factor contributing to the mishap, that in itself did not take the lives of the others. What did take their lives was the vessel riding up and over the other vessel. If you are traveling at night or in limited visability you are supposed to post a lookout at the bow and proceed with all due caution. What if it were your boat and you lost all electric power, would that give someone the right to plow over you. I don't think so.

There are no accidents, only mistakes. Just my opinion.

There is Right and there's Wrong. And also we have the Law!

  11. Thanks all... I'm liking it too.

Also, when any addons or modifications are made to this software I know it'll leyout better right out of the box. With the old design I never knew how the modifications would look after I added them and they usually required a bunch of additional tweaking.

    Spread the word about ReelBoating!

    :rb-rules:

    Looks good to me!
